Radio Host Says "Gay Mafia" Is One Of Polis' Weapons

(Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Why do some conservatives think it’s okay to say Colorado’s Democratic candidate for governor, Jared Polis, has the support of the “gay mafia?”

KNUS radio host Chuck Bonniwell, who also owns of the Cherry Creek/Gendale Chronicle, told me in a free-wheeling and respectful conversation Friday that Polis has the support of the “gay mafia.”

“Did you say gay mafia?” I interrupted.

“Well, they work hard,” replied Bonniwell.

I told him I had to write a blog post about the slur.

“Oh no, not the gay mafia. You can’t say that” said Bonniwell, who one analyst described as the “id of Colorado’s Republican Party.”

“What is the gay mafia?” I asked.

“It’s just a lot of guys I know and am friends with who work incredibly hard for Jared Polis,” answered Bonniwell. “And they man these offices. And they do a great job on his behalf. I call them the mafia because they work so hard.”

“Would you ever say the ‘Jewish mafia,'” I asked Bonniwell.

“Oh god, yes, I grew up with the Jewish mafia all around me.”

I take Bonniwell at his word but Polis is also Jewish and I didn’t hear Bonniwell–or any other conservative pundit–say Plid is part of the Jewish mafia or any other mafia.

In July, KCOL guest host Karen Kataline said she was “pretty sure” Polis was part of the “gay mafia,” and she worried on air that the Republicans’ timid treatment of Polis being gay will make it harder to defeat Polis.

“I knew it. You’re criticizing the Italians,” Bonniwell joked when I continued to object to his saying “gay mafia.”

“There are wonderful Italian people here in Colorado, and you shouldn’t put them down.” said Bonniwell, concluding with, “Why don’t you like Italians?”

  1. Bonniwell delved way back into the 1950s and the McCarthy Era for that term. The fear of an "international homosexual conspiracy" motivated manly men as diverse as Karl Marx and Frederick Engels,  who fretted about "pederasts" corrupting their worker's revolution, to the Klan, the Birchers, and of course, Joe McCarthy himself on the right.

Coloradans have "evolved" on LGBT rights, first passing local laws prohibiting anti-gay discrimination, then passing Amendment 2 which would have invalidated those ordinances, then successfully suing to prevent Amendment 2 from being implemented. Then, in 2014, Colorado courts struck down Colorado's anti-gay marriage ordinances, and clerks began marrying same-sex couples all over Colorado.

Closeted men literally pontificating about the evils of homosexuality may have led to the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. The Vatican group in question was dubbed the "Lavender Mafia" by Rod Dreher in the American Conservative in 2013.

So Bonniwell has ignored all that Colorado history to go straight and narrow back to Joe McCarthy for his bigotry.  Someone needs to tell him that Republicans can't afford to alienate conservative gay people, which definitely exist.

Meanwhile, the gay community has embraced the term and made it their own. Perhaps there is something Mr. Bonniwell needs to fully embrace as well?

  2. Another classic of explanation. Somehow, we've fallen through the looking glass and people really ARE talking like the book:

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that's all.”

    Mafia = "works hard"

  3. The term "mafia" is definitely coming back into style. The new book; "House of Trump. House of Putin;" chronicles Trump's alleged dealings with the Russian mafia.

And Trump lives up to the name by reacting as a Don would last week, during the "worst ever week" of his presidency (Manafort convictions; Cohen convictions and "flipping.).

  4. Even the right's own scariest scenerios can't hold a candle to a FSB-elected POTUS who willingly to allow Russia to hack and interfere in our elections and knowing at least six congressional Republicans visited Moscow on July 4 of this year, presumably to BEG them to do so this time around.
