No, we’re not bringing back “Friday Jams Fest” and moving it to Monday. This is just a video you need to see.
The music video below dropped late on Saturday, and it has been blowing up around the world in the 36 hours since it was released. This is “Childish Gambino” (aka Donald Glover) with “This is America.”
If you’re a little confused by the video, check out this CNN explainer or this rundown from ABC News Australia.

That was difficult to watch. I sat next to a UCLA student on a trip to DC last week who talked about the small but growing band of Trumpers on his campus who revel in getting the spotlight with their anctics. Reportedly last week they knocked a lunch tray out of an African-American kids hands, told him he was 3/5 a person and to ‘go back where he came from’. The kid apparently didn’t want to make a scene so the cops weren’t called. It’s not new on my home turf – but its not an anomaly to hear the local folk still talk about Obama in various descriptions that use the n-word.
So, who ya’ gonna’ believe . . .
. . . Kanye Kardashian Trump
. . . or your lyin’ eyes?!?!?
See? You get it. You totally get it.
The video opens up perspective[s] from someone who can become an important voice.
Somehow, I don't think this will rank up in the American social consciousness, American Song book, or much of anywhere else. Will it join protest songs performed 10 years after release? Compare this to Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land," Simone's “Mississippi Goddam,” CSNY's "Ohio," or N.W.A.’s “Fuck Tha Police” — and somehow, this seems more likely to be a powerful moment without much staying power.
I give Glover (Gambino) props for bringing some truth and accountability to the gangster rap genre, which absolutely glorified gun violence and packing heat, while totally ignoring consequences to victims. It's a lovely song with a jarring storyline.
If I had a dollar for every cornfed white farm boy rapping about his Glock and those motherf***kers, thinking he was being cool and inclusive, I'd be about $17 richer today.
