Stephen Varela Tries Too Hard, That's Not Razor Wire Edition

  •
  • by: Colorado Pols

Hoping to distract from the mounting scandals gathering in his wake, Colorado State Board of Education member and Republican CO-03 congressional candidate “Shady Steve” Varela tried to take the pressure off with one of the most predictable stunts in Colorado politics: a trip to the southern U.S. border, In Varela’s case on an alleged mission to deliver what he calls “razor wire” to recipients unknown.

Unfortunately for Varela, though perhaps a relief for humanitarian reasons, the bundles of wire behind him do not appear to be actual razor wire, but rather the same standard-grade barbed wire they’ve been using on fences in Pueblo County since territorial days:

We’re not sure what the other two longer spools are, but they’re not razor wire either–more like fencing for Varela’s backyard garden? Either way, it appears that Varela wasted his time and effort to truck materials to the border that he could have had delivered by the nearest Home Depot. And since it’s not the bonafide razor wire that Texas authorities are using along the border in defiance of the U.S Supreme Court, they don’t need it either, meaning Varela will most likely either have to return it or dump it by the roadside. Or build the wall himself we guess, with garden fence and old-fashioned barbed wire.

Since Varela’s next round of press could be substantially less favorable, enjoy the clowning while you can. This is as fun as it’s likely to get.
