Do A Very Dumb Crime, Do The Time

Former Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis (D).

As CBS Colorado reports, former Democratic Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis, emphasis on former, was convicted on a range of counts stemming from a very foolish and criminal attempt to evade the consequences of her own questionable judgment:

Former Colorado state Sen. Sonya Jaquez Lewis was convicted by a Denver jury on Wednesday on multiple charges related to her time in the state legislature.

She was convicted of all four felony charges — attempting to influence a public figure and three counts of forgery, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said…

“The public expects that governments operate honestly and transparently and that elected officials be held to a high standard,” Denver District Attorney John Walsh said in a statement. “Sonya Jaquez Lewis has now been convicted by a Denver jury of fabricating documents during a legislative investigation – behavior that we as a community simply cannot tolerate.”

Former Sen. Jaquez Lewis was the subject of an ethics inquiry in the Colorado Senate related to the misuse and alleged abuse of legislative aides. But the real trouble came when Jaquez Lewis decided to forge letters from former aides attesting to what a great boss she was, a ploy that came undone when a forgery victim found out about the letter written in their name.

What we can say in Jaquez Lewis’ case is that accountability was served, and that compares favorably to the way Republicans under the Gold Dome police themselves…or rather, do not. Legislative aides are hard-working, underpaid, and unfortunately often not treated with the respect and professionalism they deserve. To the extent that is a bipartisan problem, it should be stamped out without partisan fear or favor.

Aides are not paid to mow anybody’s lawn.
