State Representative John Kefalas today formally announced that he is seeking the State Senate District 14 seat, which covers the city of Fort Collins, Colorado. The seat is now held by Sen. Bob Bacon, who is term-limited. House District 52 Rep. Kefalas is currently serving his third term representing eastern and northern Fort Collins in the state legislature.
Kefalas, a former educator, human service worker and graduate of Colorado State University, was first elected to the Colorado Statehouse in 2006 and quickly proved himself a hard-working, honest and accessible representative. In 2008, he received a record number of votes in House District 52, becoming the first Democrat re-elected in the district in over half a century. Kefalas won his third term in office in 2010 when he received about 57% of the vote.
A member of the Finance Committee and the ranking member of the Health and Environment Committee, Kefalas has championed bringing people together around common sense solutions to help middle-class Coloradans. He has won numerous awards for his legislative efforts, while passing bills to protect consumers and seniors, promote renewable energy, cut taxes for working Coloradans and small businesses, and improve our health care system.
“As a senator, I will be in an even stronger position to help build an economy that works for all of us,” Kefalas said. “Especially in this tough economy, we need to get beyond hyper-partisanship and work together to create jobs, provide stable funding for quality education, and protect our environment.”
State Sen. Bacon said, “John Kefalas is the kind of citizen legislator our community needs in the Colorado Senate. John’s record of creating jobs for working families and preserving public education funding proves he is the kind of leader Fort Collins needs at the State Capitol.”
State Rep. Randy Fischer (D-Fort Collins) applauded Rep. Kefalas’ decision. “For years I have worked closely with John at the Capitol, and I am proud to call him my friend. John’s steadfast commitment to Fort Collins working families, Colorado schools and our local environment are the qualities that will make him a great state senator.”
Kefalas added, “I want to thank Senator Bob Bacon for his leadership and many years of selfless service to the people of Fort Collins. I hope to live up to his shining example.”
