Tom Lucero Goes On TV...Already

As Bob Moore of the Ft. Collins Coloradoan reports:

The Republican primary is still almost seven months away, but Tom Lucero will air the first commercial of the 2010 congressional campaign starting Tuesday…

…I asked the campaign about where the ad will air and was told “Fox.” I’m trying to get a clarification on whether that means the Denver Fox affiliate or cable’s Fox News Channel.

For most of the race in CD-4, Tom Lucero has been running from behind, or so we thought, given that he was the first candidate to announce yet wasn’t raising much money. In fact, it’s Lucero’s weak fundraising — he had only $32,000 cash on hand at the end of October — makes us wonder just how Lucero is paying for this. His Q4 fundraising report is not yet available online, so maybe he raked in big bucks in the last three months of the year.

We find the commercial to be a little silly, but there’s something to be said for coming out early on TV. Perhaps the ad is Lucero’s way to try to drum up more money in the fundraising department; it’s not uncommon for candidates to do something surprising like this in order to put themselves out in front, even if for only a short while, in hopes that donors will ante up. It sure helps the fundraising calls when you can tell prospective donors that they can see your first TV ad already.
