Tom Lucero Goes On TV...Already

  • by: Colorado Pols

As Bob Moore of the Ft. Collins Coloradoan reports:

The Republican primary is still almost seven months away, but Tom Lucero will air the first commercial of the 2010 congressional campaign starting Tuesday…

…I asked the campaign about where the ad will air and was told “Fox.” I’m trying to get a clarification on whether that means the Denver Fox affiliate or cable’s Fox News Channel.

For most of the race in CD-4, Tom Lucero has been running from behind, or so we thought, given that he was the first candidate to announce yet wasn’t raising much money. In fact, it’s Lucero’s weak fundraising — he had only $32,000 cash on hand at the end of October — makes us wonder just how Lucero is paying for this. His Q4 fundraising report is not yet available online, so maybe he raked in big bucks in the last three months of the year.

We find the commercial to be a little silly, but there’s something to be said for coming out early on TV. Perhaps the ad is Lucero’s way to try to drum up more money in the fundraising department; it’s not uncommon for candidates to do something surprising like this in order to put themselves out in front, even if for only a short while, in hopes that donors will ante up. It sure helps the fundraising calls when you can tell prospective donors that they can see your first TV ad already.

  1. I can look forward to putting a brick through my TV much earlier this year, I guess.

Or I’ll be a lot less sane by the time November rolls around.

      1. …onslaught of mudslinging, lies and character assassination we have to look forward to.  Way too much stupid to handle.

It’s a cumulative effect more than anything.  And it’s starting awful early.

On the plus side, I have been looking for an excuse to get rid of old fashioned TV for one of them there new fangled HDTV things.

        1. …or any of the new Flash-enabled HDTVs.

With a low-tier Netflix account, you can stream practically anything they have in their catalogue. In addition, I know (thru an Adobe rep) that with Flash-enabled TV’s, the major networks and studios will start experimenting with direct streaming to individual homes.

You didn’t think the studios set up Hulu.com just for the hell of it, did you?

  2. Is cutting a commercial, putting it on YouTube, and “announcing” that it will go on TV. He then gets tons of free press and everyone in the blogosphere views it.

Three months later when someone asks, well gee… it never actually went up on TV.

As to the message – WTF does Ward “Douche-bag” Churchill have to do with who will best represent us in Congress?

      1. are the main backers of Cory Gardner whereas Tom Lucero is his own man and has the guts to stand up and denounce Ward Churchill and Bill Ayers.  As soon as his focus group reports, I expect he’ll also vilify Mao Tse-Tung as being too close to that Rino, Dick Nixon.

David Thi called it.  This thing is put on YouTube to milk whatever free publicity he can get.  Unlike David, I don’t think it will be “tons” however.

  3. …this is the best piece of unintentional comedy I have seen in a while.  My favorite part is when he’s like “took care of that mess in Colorado.”

    Awesome.

This brings up a good question though.  Cory “I’m kind of a birther” Gardner needs Tea Party support to win a GOP primary in CD-4 and I hear Lucero is big with the Longmont 9-12ers (or whatever they are called).  This ad might be silly, but Gardner does not have enough name ID in that district to win over another conservative candidate without advertising in a primary.  And who will Tea Party nation endorse?

    1. does Gardner have to become a 9-13er?

And now that Lucero has thrown down the gauntlet, are all CD-4 candidates going to have to establish their bona fides by opening with the worst monster imaginable? “I’ll see your Bill Ayers and raise you an Angela Davis!” “Remember Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill’s friend?” “Diggs Brown was stationed in Germany. That’s right, home of Adolph Hitler.”

  4. Really? Is that the best line to start off a 2010 campaign commercial?

Answer from the voters: “Ummm… nope.”

Sheesh, this amateur’s eyes are popping out almost as much as those on that ugly, unflattering Pelosi image he chose to use. What an ugly cheap shot: I’m sure it’ll get him tons of votes from women.

Congratulations: It’s still only January, and we can officially retire the “Dealin’ Doug Award” for “Most Amateurish Political Commercial of the Year.”
