One of the best things about living in America and having legal citizenship is that you are entitled to make your voice heard through the voting process. People are allowed to actively participate in deciding which politicians will govern the United States. They can also vote on other key issues like the legalization or marijuana and doctor-assisted suicide. As hard as it might be to believe, there are many American citizens who can legally vote and choose not to. A large percentage of these people have never even taken the time to register themselves. Being able to vote is a privilege that far too many people in the United States take for granted. Here are several key reasons why Americans need to do their civic duty and go to the polls on election day.
1. Voting is a right that many people around the world do not have.
People who were born in the United States have been raised in an environment where they have always been able to vote. They never had to struggle and sacrifice in order to earn this right. Therefore, it is not surprising to find that millions of people to not value the right to vote as much as they should. They go through their lives refusing to participate in the election process. What these people often do not think about are the many people living in other countries who are not allowed to let their voice be heard in elections. They live under the rule of dictators or in countries which only permit the societal elite to vote. Many Americans do not appreciate how lucky they are to live in a totally free democracy where voting is encouraged. Refusing to vote is an insult to the millions of people who are denied voting rights across the globe.
2. People have lost their lives to give Americans the right to vote.
The United States of America was founded because people in England did not want to live under a king. They decided to sail to a new land where they could choose their own leaders and have religious freedoms. Wars have been fought and many thousands of people have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives. They did this to ensure that the right to vote and all of the other privileges that American citizens enjoy are never taken away. Senator Mike Crapo takes this issue very seriously. Mike Crapo encourages people to vote on a regular basis.
3. American citizens should choose the politicians who are going to create policies that will impact the country.
Many people like to complain about what a terrible job their elected officials are doing. However, many of these people only have themselves to blame because they did not vote. The laws and policies created by politicians are too important for American citizens to not vote when they have the opportunity. The city, state and federal lawmakers will have an impact on your quality of life to varying degrees. It only makes sense to cast your vote for the candidates who you feel are most qualified to run this country. Voting can also remove politicians from office who have not done a good job and not fulfilled promises they made on the campaign trail.
