Tipton’s Twitter Account Hacked–Unlike That Hair?

UPDATE: Says Allison Sherry of the Denver paper, Tipton spokesman Josh Green meant to Tweet the stimulus-is-bad article, and somehow wound up with the chihuahua in a toupee for unexplained shortcut-manglage reasons. We’ve reprinted the image Green apparently did link to, not hacked, after the jump. It really brings the whole tragic story together better […]

Amazon Meets California, Population 37 Million

As the Colorado Independent’s John Tomasic updates, the long war between cash-strapped states seeking remittance of lawfully due sales taxes and online e-merchants led by Amazon fiercely resisting them–a battle that has included the state of Colorado, who Amazon has proven somewhat effective at intimidating–may have entered a decisive phase. Colorado lawmakers staring down an […]

Pace Raises $100K in 30 Days, Will Stay on as Minority Leader

Democrat Sal Pace is off to a fast start in his bid to unseat freshman Republican Rep. Scott Tipton in CD-3. As The Pueblo Chieftain reports: Colorado House Minority Leader Sal Pace raised $100,000 during the first 30 days of his candidacy to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, Pace’s campaign announced Friday.  Pace also […]

Willing Talk Radio Stooges “Pull” Tipton Ad?

An interesting case-in-point–on increasingly partisan commercial media, or an ad making false claims illegal under Colorado election law? You decide as the AP reports via Real Clear Politics on the “fate” of last week’s House Majority PAC radio spots against freshman Rep. Scott Tipton: Tipton’s lawyer, John Zakhem of Denver, said the ad is flawed […]

Ashton Kutcher Vs. Westword

Protecting the people from corporate greed and abuse is a non-stop effort for progressive community organizers and political activists. In the organizer’s toolbox are a number of tools: community groups, neighborhood associations, blogging, the telephone, facebook, direct mail, email, and now… twitter ? The effectiveness of twitter as an organizing tool is being shown in […]

Will LCRP have to dissolve?

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) There’s a Sunday follow up story by Bob Moore in the Coloradoan on the criminally non-compliant Larimer County Republican Party (where the ex-chair was embezzling its money; at one point withdrawing cash at Black Hawk Casino). One of the big problems was that ex-chair Larry Carillo, probably in a […]

Taking Back the Streets from Anti-Woman Ideologues

(When misogynists say “don’t dress like a slut in order to avoid being victimized,” there always seems to be an unspoken “…by someone like me.” – promoted by ProgressiveCowgirl) Fourth of July festivities abound in Colorado this weekend, and many legislators will practice their retail politicking at parades, marches, firework displays and other photo opportunities. […]

Another Peaceful Transfer of Power Complete

We have just finished configuring the accounts for our two new front page guest editors for the second half of 2011, ProgressiveCowgirl and c rork, who begin their terms in office today following their election victories last month. It’s a great privilege to live in a blog, like our country, where leadership can transition without […]

Petitions Submitted for Paid Sick Days

It takes only 3,973 cured signatures  to qualify an issue for the Denver ballot. That might sound like quite a few, but in reality, that’s chump change, especially for the professional organizations which specialize in signature gathering.

That’s why we’re not terribly surprised to have received this press advisory today. From the Campaign for a Healthy Denver:

DENVER – Forty advocates wearing infectious disease masks will deliver more than three times the 3,973 petition signatures required to qualify for the ballot to the Denver City Clerk on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

WHAT:            Denver paid sick and safe time initiative campaign submission of petition signatures to qualify for November ballot

WHO:              Campaign for a Healthy Denver activists; a local business owner, a public health expert and a campaign spokesperson will make brief remarks

WHEN:            Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

WHERE:          Office of the Denver City Clerk, 201 W. Colfax Ave., Department 101/first floor, Denver

WHY:              Submit petition signatures for the paid sick and safe days initiative for Denver’s November ballot

VISUALS:        Forty advocates will wear infectious disease masks; Large stack of petitions to be handed to city clerk staff

This is a pretty uncontroversial issue and we can’t see many people opposing it. At the very least, we can’t see the type of vocal opposition needed to take this kind of issue down. Polling has indicated that 65% of Denver voters would support the measure, and while we’re not entirely sure that the margin will be that high, we’re confident that the hardest part of this whole process will be getting the measure on the ballot.

Still, though, what an odd way to get press attention. They’re going to have 40 people wearing infectious disease masks down at city hall? Imagine the poor TV viewers who had the volume off when they see that footage pop up on screen. It’s going to be a SARS scare all over again. But hey, at least you could get paid for the time you take off work.  That is if hypochondria qualifies under this measure.

Miklosi to Take On Coffman?

That’s the word today from Lynn Bartels at the Denver newspaper’s blog, confirming a not-very-well-kept secret that Democratic state Rep. Joe Miklosi is weighing a challenge for Mike Coffman’s CD-6 seat. Rep. Miklosi is not yet term limited in his state house seat, so this isn’t a must-make decision for him at this point in […]

Larimer County GOP Facing $200,000 in Fines

As the Ft. Collins Coloradoan reports, the Larimer County Republican Party is looking at as much as $216,000 in fines because of problems stemming from former Party Chairman Larry Carillo: Former Larimer County Republican Party Chairman Larry Carillo used more than $17,000 in party money for payments to two companies he owned and for ATM […]

Cory Gardner Sounds The Retweet

Fox News and the rightiesphere swung into action today at an apparent live one: The chief economic culprit of President Obama’s Wednesday press conference was undoubtedly “corporate jets.” He mentioned them on at least six occasions, each time offering their owners as an example of a group that should be paying more in taxes. “I […]

Google and Stump Speeches: They Don’t Mix

Los Angeles Times–really. It’s a rule. Double-check these things. Michele Bachmann delivered her presidential announcement in Waterloo, Iowa, Monday because she was born there, but she inadvertently ended up reminding residents of a dark chapter in their town’s history. In an interview with Fox News Channel, Bachmann, the Minnesota conservative, pointed out that John Wayne, […]

Un-Vailing the Koch Brothers

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) POLS UPDATE #2: Washington Post, add Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a lead plaintiff in the lawsuit challenging federal health care reform, to the Koch list: He spoke at a breakfast about federalism and touted his office’s role in lawsuits against the federal government involving health care and the […]

Tipton on Democratic “Super PAC” Hit List

Talking Points Memo says Democrats can play in a post-Citizens United world, too: On the heels of the $20 million economic-themed ad blitz by Karl Rove’s political money machine this week, Democrats are taking to the air with their own attack ad campaign targeting Republicans over the budget. The six-figure campaign by House Majority PAC, […]

CO Pro-Choice Advocate Draws Ire of National Pro-Lifer

(So they DO want to ban birth control now? Tell Ken Buck quick! – promoted by Colorado Pols) Last week, HuffingtonPost Denver featured a commentary from NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado Political Director Toni Panetta raising the point that anti-choice politicians aren’t just out to restrict abortion anymore – they’re going full-bore after birth control during their […]

CoGAP Goes Bye-Bye?

We were tipped about this a few weeks ago, but we wanted to wait for awhile to see if there were other explanations. A self-described government ethics watchdog that made quite a bit of noise over the past year or so has apparently closed up shop without so much as a goodbye. The Colorado Government […]

Marriage Equality Wins in New York State

Sofia Resnick writes for the American Independent news network: “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a worker … people across this state … the same rights I have with my wife,” said New York Sen. Mark J. Grisanti (R-60th District) before declaring the 33rd “yes” vote the New York Senate needed to pass […]

Fruits On Parade!

“Economic expert” Eric Fruits. (photo via Twitter) A few weeks ago, we briefly discussed a “study” from a right-wing thinktank opposed to Initiative 25. To recap, that’s the ballot initiative proposed by Sen. Rollie Heath and supported by a range of fiscal policy and progressive groups, that would revert Colorado sales and income taxes to […]

Paul Ryan Radioactive to Republicans

The Republican budget plan drafted by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan has created a — yes, we’ll say it — shitstorm of problems for Republicans around the country because of a key component that would dramatically change Medicare. Here in Colorado, freshman Rep. Cory Gardner has been furiously trying to spin the Medicare piece of “The […]

Polis Co-Sponsors Medical Marijuana Normalization Bill

We discussed earlier this week the efforts by Rep. Jared Polis of Boulder to clarify the current policy of federal law enforcement regarding medical marijuana. Under Colorado’s Amendment 20 passed in 2000, marijuana is legal to grow and use in this state with a qualifying medical condition, and a memo from the Justice Department in […]

Tea Party is Slowly Killing Republicans

We’ve written several times in this space that the Tea Party movement of 2010 may end up irreparably damaging the Republican Party. As a new poll out of Florida indicates, the damage is already being done. From The Miami Herald: Beware, Florida Republicans: The tea party movement that swept you into office in 2010 could […]

Without context, Post’s Nottingham references in Hancock stories unfair

In three of the stories that The Denver Post ran about Michael Hancock’s alleged ties to prostitutes, including the big splashy ones on the front page, Post reporters, as if to bolster a weak story, tossed in vague and misleading references to U.S. District Judge Edward Nottingham. 9News revealed in 2008 that Nottingham was allegedly […]

FRIDAY UPDATE: Coverage from the Vail paper and the Colorado Independent. —– UPDATE #3: More details from Common Cause’s invitation email after the jump. —– UPDATE #2: The uber-swanky Ritz-Carlton Resort at Bachelor Gulch is the location we just got from multiple sources. We are working on confirmation now. —– UPDATE: Not much information yet, […]

Polis Pushes Feds to Leave Medical Marijuana Alone

From The Hill: Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.) are urging the Obama administration this week to reiterate earlier vows to leave the enforcement of medical marijuana laws up to states. The lawmakers want Attorney General Eric Holder to re-avow his commitment to a 2009 Department of Justice (DOJ) memorandum – known as […]
