Republican Primary for State Treasurer?

  • by: Colorado Pols

While Republicans in the legislature are busy trying to out-ridiculous each other, a potential primary is brewing in the race for State Treasurer.

One candidate is already running for the post, at least informally (and we don’t mean the silly Muhammad Ali Hasan – not until he proves otherwise). Walker Roberts Stapleton, a businessman who is a cousin of George W. Bush, may soon face a primary from Rep. Don Marostica, who has been eyeing the seat as a launching pad for an eventual run for Governor.

However, Marostica is also being pushed by some to run for Governor now, although he would face a tougher path with Marc Holtzman already assumed to be running. Marostica has emerged as one of the few remaining moderate and rational Republicans in the legislature, but whether he could get through a Republican primary with that reputation remains to be seen.

  1. He’s a cousin of W, not a 1st cousin but certainly related.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/

The last time he came here was August 2004 for the wedding of his nephew George P. Bush, son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R). It took another wedding to bring the president back, the Saturday nuptials of Walker Stapleton and Jennifer Bertocchi. Stapleton is the son of the former president’s cousin Dorothy Walker Stapleton and her husband, Craig Roberts Stapleton, once a partner with George W. Bush in ownership of the Texas Rangers baseball team and now the presidentially appointed U.S. ambassador to France.

  2. He has a very shady financial past as a developer. He was able to out-spend the Bible thumpers in his ’06 primary by self-funding — and HD-51 is a safe GOP seat — but selling statewide is a very different matter.

  3. Marostica?  Is this the same guy that wanted to blow the budget all to hell by removing spending caps?

If Marostica can’t keep a limit on his spendthrift ways – I will be voting for anybody but Marostica for Treasurer.

And if you have a last name that happens to be the same as the old airport – even better!

      1. I’m not being snarky here, I promise.  Is it his name ID?  Elected office experience?  A particular accomplishment?  I don’t know much about him….

        1. is that if Don Marostica is the supposed face of the remnant moderates in the GOP, then they are worse off, not better. The guy has a lot of financial negatives that will kill him statewide — and for Treasurer? Sheesh.

          1. The wackos are running the show and they’d rather have an ax murderer than anyone who could possibly be perceived as a moderate.  Looks like Dems are safe for at least another election cycle from the kind of Republican who could win back the majority of indie voters and give a moderate Dem a headache in any statewide election.

        2. That’s what we’ve seen recently. And Marostica has shown himself to be a reasonable moderate; just last week by trying to get rid of Arv-Bird, for example.

Bob Schaffer never had a chance against Mark Udall because Schaffer was more conservative than Udall was liberal. But if you have a moderate R and a moderate D, then all things being equal, the R should have the advantage in this state.

  4. After some poking around I found this bio.  Seems like a serious challenger for any republican, and someone with the “experience” to challenge Kennedy.  Just thought I would give you all a little more detail him, so its not just a “he’s so and so’s cousin, half-brother, twin in a second life”.

                1. …guys like David Thielen and Justin Henceforth (spelling? – sorry if I got it wrong) who leave their names

Anytime someone, with their NAME, blogs and tells me something, I’ll listen — otherwise, it’s silly entertainment that keeps life fun — if you really care, you’ll put your name on it, dude

Ralphie – you spelled my mother’s name wrong – no truth to any of those accusations either — I think Dr Corry (PHD) covered those accusations best in this very well done article of his that included my name –

                  1. spoiled adult children living with their parents and with too much time and money on their hands may try to hack into my computer.  As Ralphie’s link can attest to.  🙂

                    1. lol…. all unsubstantiated and lies… which is why Accountability For Colorado didn’t use it

On the other hand, you must support the same race-bating attacks that were manufactured by Accountability For Colorado and, possibly, other members of the CODA-Web??

And for that, you should hide your name – because otherwise, you would be a confirmed RACE-BATER (and I, Muhammad Ali Hasan, might be a lot of things, but I would hate to be a confirmed racist)

Whether it be now or later, I look forward to when guys like Troy Eid and Ryan Frazier will be running statewide…. once us Republicans have more minorities on the ticket, you’re gonna have to amp up the racist attacks —

                      http://www.summitdaily.com/art

I hope that Ivy League Education helps Michael Bennet in brainstorming stereotypes with the rest of the folks at CODA….

                      🙂
