Democrat Announces for Senate District 5, Opens Up CU Regent Seat

  • by: Colorado Pols

From The Aspen Times:

Gail Sheridan Schwartz on Wednesday announced her plans to challenge incumbent Sen. Lewis H. Entz, a Republican farmer from the San Luis Valley, to represent Senate District 5. The district comprises 11 counties, from Delta County in the west to Saguache County in the east, and from the northern Pitkin County line to the southern border of Colorado.

Schwartz, 56, a Democrat on the University of Colorado Board of Regents, scored a political upset by unseating a Republican incumbent to win the CU regents seat in 2000.

She made her decision to seek the Senate seat recently, after Colorado Rep. Kathleen Curry, D-Gunnison, whose District 61 also includes Pitkin County, decided against running for Senate…

…Schwartz said she will not be seeking re-election to the board of regents.

  1. No CU Regent has merit to continue service in public office. With this group’s woeful performance, I can’t believe that anyone of them would stick their head up. The biggest collective of losers in the State of Colorado, without question!!!!

  2. I don’t care who the Dems run and how Democratic the district is, Lew Entz wins.  In this district, the numbers don’t make any difference.  If you know the district, you know Lew wins.

  3. You bet Entz wins, he’s moderate, does well for El Valle and he’s a sharp water buffalo with a good record on the AWDI (anyone remember that?) controversy and other schemes on valley water. He’s in as long as he wants it.

  4. Plus, like all REAL men and women, Entz shuns the Fascist necktie in favor of the All-American Bolo Tie.  Neckties cut off circulation to the brain, explaining the votes of most of the urban legislators.  Bolos look good, feel good, and keep the wimps away.

  5. Entz might have won this seat, EXCEPT:

    — He foolishly went against both of the Salazar brothers in 2004, burning the biggest bridge he had behind him…
    — He vocally supported Referendum A, a death knell for any candidate in that district
    — and he is one of the most lackluster campaigners the GOP has on its side…

    Entz is going down.

  6. socodem is right.  entz always won because he carried a dem vote based on his protection of water issues.  voting the wrong way on water is the kiss of death in the valley and on the western slope.  additionally, the north part of the district is still new to him and he doesn’t have the kind of support he had in the old 5th.

schwartz can beat entz – that of course doesn’t mean she will, but she certainly can.  entz might choose to sit this one out if he thinks he is in for a tough fight.

  7. Wrong, roger.  Entz will win as usual.  Schwartz was a complete disaster as a regent, joining in the cover-up of the athletic department scandal and totally botching the oversight role in that case.  She couldn’t win under any circumstances, against Lew Entz, she’s an embarassment.

  8. Here’s what Diane Carman wrote about Gail Schwartz after the Regents tried to bury the CU Athletic Department scandal:
Nobody has ever accused the University of Colorado Board of Regents of being politically astute. But its handling of the independent
investigative commission’s report on the recruiting scandal Wednesday couldn’t have been more inept if it had been choreographed by Larry, Moe and Curly.  The regents clearly wanted to put the lid on the embarrassing story eaturing nine women who said they were raped by football players, the convictions of several players who provided alcohol to underage recruits, and an athletic department employee who admits to hiring
hookers and strippers using university phones and (nyuk, nyuk, nyuk) his own money.  So when resented with a 50-page report charging niversity
administrators with failing to address numerous indications of problems in the football program over a seven-year period, the egents responded immediately.  With platitudes.  “It’s time to heal,” said chairman Pete Steinhauer. “On to
better days,” said Jim Martin. “Enough is enough,” said Jerry Rutledge. And, most inappropriately, especially considering the
nature of the scandal, was this gem from Gail Schwartz, apparently aimed at administrators, players and all you rowdy Buffs fans out
    there: “Giddyup.”
