  1. Did anyone else see this last night on 60 Minutes? (or, does anyone here still watch 60 Minutes?) A journalist covering e-commerce started getting anonymous death threats (maybe stopping short of direct threats), but the threats traced back to eBay employees, and the 60 Minutes report left me thinking the threats might have been connected to higher-ups within eBay. Innocent 'til proven guilty, of course. To me, this was an interesting watch.

    1. Yes. We saw that. Even though (as is typical) the top company officers were allowed to walk, the evidence indicated to me they pulled an Al Capone and sent their goons to do the deed.

Understandable in a way. When the “conservative” movement decided that accountability to law was subservient to “owning the Libs”,
it became…”so…whatever. If it is good enough for the GQP, it’ good enough for me!”

The theme; “If you come after me, I’m coming after you” (Geez,Where have I heard that??) is now the new call to arms for the Orange Horde. Loosely translated, the “1% doctrine” says, ” If you look sideways at me and I feel even 1% threatened, I have the 100 percent right to slap the shit out of you…preemptively.

This is a direct influence of the MAGA mind.

          1. I'm tired of it. Trump is a fail video montage but as a presidential candidate. The first few times is funny but 7 years is a long time to watch people get hit in the crotch and fall on their face.

            1. It would be crazy if we all didn't have Trump fatigue on some level, but I do enjoy watching him get what he so richly deserves. I do also hope we as a country can tune him out at some point, maybe if he finally ends up in jail.

  2. Gov. Polis gets a response on Daily Kos.

Sorry, but I got pissed off watching him on Jen Psaki’s show.  I have no idea WHY she decided to give air time to Polis, other than he appeared on CNN with Governor Cox to piss on abortion rights.

    ….

We have entered an age where one side is supporting political violence to overthrow a democracy.  Since when is that not evil?  Are we supposed to let that slide?  And if we stand up for the rule of law, Democrats are the ones being “dehumanized” by Republicans.

Sadly, we are in a political war to save democracy.  And people like Polis drive me nuts.  He doesn’t see what is happening.  If he wants to bridge divides, I would suggest he give speeches in front of Trump supporters.  I’m sure they will welcome him with open arms.  /s.

    1. I'm unable to read the Denver Post opinion piece cuz of pay wall and Denver Post's unusable website in general, but I'm gonna go on a limb and defend Polis's poor choice of words.

I feel pretty certain that no one thinks abortions are a good thing to do. No one is like "Yeah! I get to go get an abortion!" Most of us would want to avoid that decision and that process, so in that case since we don't think of it as "good", it's "bad".

The big difference is we think of it as "bad" as compared to… most medical procedures while Republicans think if as "bad" as compared to murder which are way different!

      1. I couldn’t get past the sub headline:

Governor Polis is our allie and he should chose is words more carefully. (sic)

What the holy hell happened to headline editors? My father edited headlines with a soft lead pencil back in the day. How did someone not catch these errors:

        allie, chose, is

and correct them before this saw the light of day?

Maybe I should donate a soft lead pencil to the Denver Post opinion page editors.

Actually, I understand what ( I think) Polis was trying to say, and where he is coming from. As a gay man who adopted his and Marlon’s children, he probably went through some kind of expensive, long -drawn out surrogate process for which, yeah, every sperm was sacred and every egg divine.

It should go without saying that most heterosexual and bisexual women don’t have that view. Pregnancy is something that happens with or without consent, with or without intent. Most women that get abortions already have other children that they are trying to provide for. I did. For us, abortion is a decision to have the best quality of life possible for existing lives that are already breathing on the planet. It is a difficult choice. But having that choice is a necessary and beautiful thing.
Governor Polis could have just said something like that, to create a little nuance and context, rather than “Democrats think abortion is bad.”

        1. Maybe they’ve turned the editing over to an A.I. bot. They’ve been ruthlessly cutting staff ever since the hedge fund bought the paper.

2J2D, you shot holes in my theory before I could get it posted

    2. In regards to Polis's strategy against MAGA folk, I haven't figured out a strategy that works against the Victimhood of MAGA folk well.

Our system of government is based on good faith arguments. Unfortunately, MAGA folk don't argue in good faith because they can "win" any argument by hurling insults and claiming that MAGA folk are the true victims because THEY (Democrats, RINOs, the US judicial system, etc.) are unfair and evil. I put "win" in quotes cuz they never actually win any argument, it's just that most of us don't want to continue listening to bad faith arguments and insults so we just end the conversation as soon as we can.

How do we argue against bad faith arguments? We could try returning the insults and call MAGA folk evil and stupid but then that just makes everyone involved miserable and often escalates into violence and I'm not a fan of that.

I don't know how to end MAGA Victimhood but I'd like to. I'm sure being a gay Jewish person, Polis has thought about it more than I have. I'm not saying his strategy is right either but I'm all for trying different strategies.

A novel strategy that I'm interested in is reflected in Star Trek: Picard, Season 3, Episode 8 in the "battle" between Data and Lore (2 versions of Data who both existed inside Data's consciousness)…

At the outset of their positronic battle, the ruthless Lore seemingly had the upper hand, as he attempted to erase Data piece by piece. Data even offered Lore his memories, since Lore had so few of his own, and Data believed his memories defined him and were the best of him. A bemused Lore absorbed all of Data's memories, and Data's essence seemingly dissipated.

Lore didn't realize Data had tricked him. By absorbing the memories Data offered to him, Lore was absorbing Data himself, slowly merging with him and eventually becoming him.

      https://screenrant.com/star-trek-picard-data-lore-dead-explained/

Data won the battle by giving Lore everything Lore demanded, which was everything that Data was. Lore wanted to destroy "Them" but Data made Lore a part of "Us" so there was no more "Them" to destroy.

I think this is a strategy that could make MAGA influence ineffective. It won't work with every MAGA person cuz most of them define their "Us" as simply "not them".

It's a risky strategy but one I enjoy the idea of implementing better than insults and violence.

  3. Trump’s Dominance Cage Match with The Courts and Why He has To Lose Josh Marshall at TPM.

The news David covers today, of Trump spending the weekend attacking DC district Judge Tanya Chutkan explains why. This entire range of cases Trump faces, indeed Trump’s whole decade-long smash and grab run through American public life, is about one thing: who is bigger? The American republic, the state, or Donald Trump?

I was talking with David this morning about just what the rules are for publicly attacking your judge during your trial. But the details are beside the point. Trump is trying to make this, as he does in every part of his life, a battle over who is dominating who, who’s calling the shots. Trump or Judge Chutkan? To the extent there’s a legal strategy behind it it is to turn the trial into a grudge match so that Trump’s lawyers can go to the DC circuit on appeal and say, “Look. This got personal between my client and the judge. She couldn’t see past the fight. So the whole process is tainted.”

As I noted, the real issue here is, who’s dominating who? Not just Trump vs Judge Chutkan but Trump vs the American republic.

    1. Trump's strategy of insulting the prosecutors, insulting and antagonizing the judges, and generally making a scene, is not new and it never works. Almost every pro se party insults their judge or complains about the "rigged" system. Every judge has seen it and has dealt with it. Trump's judges will not engage him and will not let him force a recusal. Because of his bullhorn, he is more dangerous than most and more likely to pollute the jury pool, but that also will not go well for him. Everyone summoned for jury duty that admits they follow Trump on social media will be stricken, for cause. He is raising money, but he is sabotaging his defense.

  4. Thank you 2Y2D for posting the link to the Op Ed written by 3 women legislators in today’s Denver Post.

While there’s always a lot to be angry about from right (Trump, DeSantis, Abbot, et al) we shouldn’t let those who are supposed to be our allies off the hook. Honestly, I feel like hearing that “abortion is bad” and struggling families just want “free childcare” from someone who is supposed to stand up for Democratic values is even worse.

I doubt that Polis cares what the little people think but I hope that the next time we elect a Governor that we pay closer attention. I supported Kerry Kennedy in 2018, she would have made a fine Governor but she just couldn’t compete against Jared’s money. I always felt that Polis bought his way to the Governor’s office and he’s using it as a stepping stone to run for President.

Don’t fall for the mansplaining rich boy again Colorado. This is why we need someone with common sense and compassion to be our next Governor. Qualities most likely found in a woman.

    1. Oooh don't critique Polis' wealth and the way it distorts our political processes as well as his own understanding of the world. You are about to be accused of being a Ganahl (or even Boebert!) supporter.

      1. Colorado candidates for President do not have a great track record.

Colorado governors who haven't campaigned in support of other governors or Presidents don't strike me as the most likely "winner" in the Democratic primaries.  And in a 2028 race against VP Harris, Gov. Newsom, Gov Whitmer, and no doubt others, I see him as a more likely general election winner than a primary and convention winner.

  5. Trump keeps claiming he can't get fair trials while running for office. He can fix that easily and all by himself. He has the power to not run for office! Easy-peasy!

    1. On the official website, the document went up, the document went down.  Asked about it, a spokesperson said it was "inaccurate."

I'd guess there was a draft press release with a list of all the possible things the grand jury might vote on, prepped so there could be a rapid release as soon as the actual charges are laid by the grand jury.
