Santorum's Like Glue: Bounces Off Me, Sticks To You

The most unintentionally (?) awesome GOP presidential primary ad yet–Washington Post:

AIRING: On broadcast and cable in Michigan.

KEY IMAGES: A Mitt Romney doppelganger armed with what looks like an assault rifle enters a warehouse and looks around shiftily. When a cardboard cutout of Rick Santorum pops out from behind a pillar, the Romney lookalike opens fire, spraying mud all around the cut out but not hitting the former Pennsylvania senator’s image. The Romney lookalike continues to pace, growing more and more annoyed as he fires in vain at other Santorums that pop out. As the ad closes, the Romney lookalike tries to unjam his gun but it backfires, spitting a dollop of mud on the front of his crisp white shirt…

Santorum’s ad stands out because it’s a rare attempt at humor in what has been an expensive and nasty campaign ad war. His campaign is hoping the goofy image of Romney running around with a mud-filled rifle will stick with voters.

Folks, it’s either mud on Mitt Romney’s shirt in this ad, or Rick Santorum’s people have a better sense of humor than we (or anyone) had heretofore given them credit for.

We’re going to let our readers believe whatever they want to.

  1. Call me a prude, but I just don’t like pairing assault rifles with political advertisements.  Not in this country.   Imagine replacing the Santorum target with an Obama target and see what you’d think.

I get the humor.  I get the audience isn’t someone like me.  But, still.

      1. It’s Santorum’s ad with the other guy shooting santorum and Santorum. Who are we to tell some guy not to shoot himself at himself? I believe in choice. 😉

    1. before watching the ad. I thought she was going to vomit. Seriously.

I can’t think that they were going for that. Someone else, maybe. But Santorum is really upset by the Google situation. So while he allegedly has a sense of humor, this probably isn’t a sign of it.

FWIW, I laughed so hard I cried a little. Out loud.

  2. I have to give respect where due. There’s been very little humor (sly or otherwise) in political spots over the years, so when it’s used it makes the spot stand out.

    1. Someone pointed out on Facebook that all those mud splotches kind of look like santorum.

Although it’s awesome that there’s a market for a Mitt Romney impersonator now. Yay job creation!
