The T-Shirt Ad That Says A Mouthful

  • by: Colorado Pols

Now for sale in the merch section at the Colorado Republican Party’s website:

There’s…a lot to unpack here! We could do it but sometimes it’s better to let the jokes make themselves. Suffice to say that five minutes in a history book or 30 seconds in a middle school hallway takes care of this whole “children are not oppressors” business.

And remember, “white misses” is the shirt, not the wearer. The interchangeability is just a coincidence.

  1. Wow, that's crazy misleading in design! The opposite of saying the quiet part out loud – they put the actual message in light font and smaller size under what we're supposed to see.

  2. Reminds me of a great t-shirt I saw in a store front window in Crested Butte many years ago.

In big letters, underneath a skier, "I was on Western State's Ski Team."

Below, in much smaller letters, "I also graduated from Western State."

  3. It's not white misses they're going for. It's white suburban moms, who are turning out to be an oddly solid block for the Trumpers. This shirt sells in that demographic.

  4. The Colorado GOP merch page is revealing.  All products are variations on

    • Elephant logos — no text.
    • Make Colorado Great Again
    • Fire Polis White
    • Dear Polis, Hands Off!
    • Children are Not Oppressors White Misses Feminine Fit T-Shirt

Comparison to CO Democratic merch of

    • Vote Local
    • Volunteer Definition
    • Colorado Democrat – Pride
    • Proud Colorado Democrat (Natural Canvas Tote)
    • Let's Go Vote
    • Join The Big Tent Party

  5. Recently, we showed a video of a reading of “ I am every good thing” , by Derrick Barnes, to a summer school reading class. The theme of the week was “Confidence”.

It’s a charming portrait of a typical young boy. The narrator persona is an African American child. The intro video scrolled through dozens of names of black males killed by police in just the last few years. That’s also the dedication page in the book.

That grabbed me in the gut. I explained to the ( mostly white)  class that these were all names of young black males killed by police. I explained that some people think that black people are more likely to be bad or criminals, before they even get to know them. We call that attitude “racism”, I said. Kids nodded and looked thoughtful ( not intimidated, guilty, or defensive). They got it.

In many districts, even that simple age-appropriate explanation of racism and mention of police-involved shootings would be a huge red flag that could get me reprimanded or fired.

If the “anti-CRT” grifters get their way on your local school board, that teachable moment would be forbidden.
