What you can do to fight for progress this week (February 1)

To the families of the victims and the survivors of mass school shootings in America, gun violence is no laughing matter.

But last week, Rep. Lauren Boebert callously mocked one of the survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018 that killed 17 people and wounded 17 more. Boebert harassed this survivor of gun violence in defense of fellow freshman freakshow GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who accosted the same person on Capitol Hill not long after the shooting–and has suggested that the Parkland shooting and other mass shooting tragedies were staged. This is the kind of outrageous contempt for common decency we expected from Lauren Boebert, but seeing Boebert live up to the worst fears of her critics before the election still shocks the conscience. In less than a month in office, Boebert has delivered almost daily embarrassing headlines for Colorado while the issues facing her constituents are ignored. Boebert has even made her colleagues in Congress fear for their own safety by insisting on carrying a gun everywhere she goes after her aid and comfort to the insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.

Action item #1 this week: call Rep. Boebert’s office right now at (202) 225-4761 and demand an apology for her childish harassment of Parkland mass shooting survivor David Hogg. And if you haven’t already, make sure to sign our petition calling on Rep. Boebert and Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado to resign from Congress for helping incite violence against American democracy.

Love discuss the struggles and possibilities of committing ourselves to an abolitionist goal of educational freedom, as opposed to reform, and moving beyond the educational survival complex. Abolitionist Teaching is built on the creativity, imagination, boldness, ingenuity, and rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists to demand and fight for an educational system where all students are thriving, not simply surviving. Learn about the importance of culturally responsive and sustaining teaching and learning practices in the classroom, examine the impact of America’s racism on Black children and Black families, and how to foster social justice classrooms and schools.

The Wilderness Society: 30×30 Campaign Kickoff — Colorado Front Range

On a daily basis, we see the impacts of climate change and the loss of wild nature across our state, with increasing drought and species at risk of extinction. Our goal is to increase the pace and scale of protected land and waters in Colorado to 30% by 2030. Thousands of people on Colorado’s Front Range head up into the hills to recreate in these lands and waters. It is our responsibility to protect these spaces as well. Now is the time to get involved! The Biden Administration will soon sign an executive order in support of 30×30, so we need our Colorado elected officials to lead in this effort, too. Come to our 30×30 Kickoff Meeting to learn more about the campaign and what this executive order will mean for Colorado!

History Colorado: Virtual Class: Indigenous Futurism with Renata Burchfield

When you think of Native Americans, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Did you think of something modern or historical? Did you imagine Natives in space? Did you imagine Natives time travelling? Indigenous Futurism places Indigenous peoples in the future and allows us to envision what culture, identity, and society look like in different, sometimes fantastic, situations. We’ll watch short films and read contemporary short stories that give us insight into our current reality and imagine ways forward out of current problems.
