Rep. Mike Coffman endured almost two hours of brutal questioning over his and Donald Trump’s agenda last night in Aurora, and mostly managed to keep his temper in check. But not entirely, as you can see in the video clip below from very near the end–which betrays how Coffman really felt about the folks who showed up:
COFFMAN: The people that, Republicans, when Obama was President, everything was, ‘what are you doing to stand up to stand up to this President? What are you doing every time the President does something? Why aren’t you speaking out against the President,’ and now I’m getting the same thing…
(Audience heckling)
…from the left. When I disagree with the President, I will speak out with the President. But I’m not going to do it every other day, it’s when the subject’s fitting. I spoke out on (unintelligible), I spoke out against the President over his first refugee plan…
(Audience shouts)
Look, I think, those of you on the extreme left will never be satisfied until Trump is gone. [Pols emphasis]
(Audience cheers)
Though no doubt this felt really cathartic to say after almost two hours in the hot seat, there was an important difference in the way Coffman responded to demands from the right that he “stand up” to President Barack Obama compared to today, when he is asked to keep the promise he made on the campaign trail to “stand up” to Donald Trump. And with it in mind, Coffman’s “I get hit from all sides” schtick falls apart.
We’re pretty sure Coffman never once said Trump “is not an American.”
