Trump Blows Up Bipartisan Housing Bill In Fit Of Election Denial Pique

CBS News reports while members of Congress in both parties drop their jaws:

President Trump canceled a planned signing ceremony on Wednesday for a landmark housing affordability bill that passed Congress by wide bipartisan margins, saying he will not sign the legislation into law until lawmakers pass an elections bill known as the SAVE America Act.

Mr. Trump was set to sign the bill, known as the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, during an event at the Capitol. The measure, the most comprehensive housing legislation in decades, aims to increase housing supply and bring down costs, including by limiting institutional investors from purchasing certain single-family homes.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” he wrote. “Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT”

Up until this morning’s surprise cancellation of the signing of this landmark bill meant to alleviate the housing shortage that is crushing American Dreams from coast to coast, Republicans and Democrats were holding hands and singing Kumbaya over this rare bipartisan consensus to fix one of the country’s biggest long-term economic imbalances. Here’s Sen. John Hickenlooper’s statement after the Senate’s final passage this week:

“Homeownership remains one of the strongest pathways to economic mobility. But across Colorado, people are working multiple jobs and still struggling to afford a home,” said Hickenlooper. “This bill helps level the playing field by limiting Wall Street’s influence in the housing market, expanding loan support for veterans, and making the dream of homeownership more attainable for millions of hardworking families.”

Meanwhile in the House, the bill passed with the support of 7 out of 8 Colorado representative voting in favor, with only Rep. Lauren Boebert voting against for reasons she hasn’t yet Tweeted. Here’s Rep. Brittany Pettersen’s statement on the vote yesterday sending the bill to President Donald Trump’s desk:

“All across Colorado, families are being squeezed by the rising cost of housing. Whether in the Denver metro area or our rural mountain communities, there simply aren’t enough homes, and that shortage is driving up costs for everyone,” said Pettersen. “Housing affordability is one of the top issues I hear about from constituents, which is why I fought to include three of my bills in the most significant housing legislation in 30 years. This represents meaningful progress on one of the biggest challenges facing working families. It will help boost housing supply, remove barriers to construction, and expand access to homes families can actually afford. It’s rare these days, but this is an example of what Congress can — and should — be doing: rolling up our sleeves and working together to address the urgent issues facing the American people. While I know there’s still a lot more work we need to do, I’m proud to have helped shape this legislation and get it across the finish line, and I look forward to seeing it signed into law.”

Well folks, due to Trump’s refusal despite the lack of any evidence ever emerging to accept that he lost the 2020 presidential elections, and facing what is increasingly looking to be a historical wipeout for Republicans in the midterm elections, you/your kids can’t have a nice house! Trump’s cancellation of the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act comes as he heads to Capitol Hill to meet with Republican Senators who already weren’t happy with his demands to pass the SAVE Act, and willingness to blow up business as usual to force the question. It’s possible that this latest tantrum will get resolved. Or, Trump could dig in and bring his own party’s agenda to a long-term halt over a bill they don’t have the votes to pass.

It was a rare moment for Republicans in Washington to show they can set aside their total partisan warfare long enough to reach across the aisle and get something good done for the American people.

And at least for the current news cycle, Trump ruined everything once again.
