Early last month, Colorado Republican Party chairman Dave “Let’s Go Brandon” Williams was asked about the possibility that the state party might formally endorse ex-President Donald Trump ahead of the Super Tuesday primary in recognition of Trump’s commanding lead in every poll over his gaggle of opponents. Williams indicated strongly that he was personally supportive of the former President, but that he was “bound by rules” preventing the party from making a pre-primary endorsement. Williams teased the idea that in his estimation, there’s an “appetite” for changing those rules.
Yesterday the other shoe dropped, with former Moms for Liberty Colorado leader and hard-charging conservative agitatrix Darcy Shoening, who has of late been raising money for Republican legislative candidates, calling for a vote by the GOP central committee to endorse Trump:
Dear Colorado GOP Central Committee Member,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thank you for all you do for our great state and country. I’m reaching out to you today to garner support for an official Zoom call of the Colorado GOP Central Committee, to officially endorse Donald J. Trump for President of the United States…
Biden wants us to wait for the primary results, which are predictable; Joe Biden loves nothing more than the continued debates, media, and attention surrounding the trailing candidates. Any day spent humoring the rest of the field is another day wasted, not advancing President Trump past Biden and into the Oval Office.
The primary is fast approaching, and President Trump will be the nominee. I am calling on you to fully support him and call on the other candidates to resign now. No further time, resources, or energy shall be wasted on candidates trailing by double digits.
We haven’t seen an update from Schoening since yesterday on her progress, but this seems like exactly the kind of “push” Williams was looking for in order to ratify the state party’s support for Trump. Williams along with the party’s “election integrity expert” former Rep. Ron Hanks are both steadfast believers in the “Big Lie” that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election, so closing the loop and throwing the party’s support behind Trump for 2024 is not a big lift.
If the Colorado GOP does wade into the primary to endorse Trump, it will certainly make national headlines, and earn Williams lucrative loyalty points with Trump. If you’re a Colorado Republican who wants someone other than Trump to win the nomination in 2024…well, you probably should have done more to get Trump’s opponents within 20 points.
Love it or hate it, the Colorado GOP under Williams is Trump’s GOP. This pre-emptive endorsement would only be a formality.
