What Happened to Jim DeMint's Rally for Buck?

  •
  • by: Colorado Pols

We’re trying to get to the bottom of something kind of curious–it was our understanding that firebrand GOP Sen. Jim DeMint was hosting a “special event” at Mesa State College in Grand Junction tonight, occasioning the premiere of Colorado U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck’s new ad (see “V.I.P. Pass” flyer below). It was apparently canceled sometime today with little notice.

Now, Buck’s status as a “Junior DeMint,” or a candidate especially favored by the polarizing conservative Senator from South Carolina, is of course well known, as DeMint was behind Buck fairly early in the primary. But DeMint, like Buck, has had a number of recent gaffes in the press, including some fairly regrettable remarks about unmarried and/or gay teachers.

The Spartanberg Herald-Journal described the comments this way: “DeMint said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn’t be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who’s sleeping with her boyfriend — she shouldn’t be in the classroom.” DeMint did not apparently state his position on whether sexually active unmarried male teachers should be similarly removed from classrooms.

Oh, wait a minute, a really good reason to cancel this thing just occurred to us…
