We’ve been following the increasingly acrimonious “nonpartisan” local elections playing out in many cities around Colorado, and as we think we’ve made clear it’s getting pretty nasty in some locales. Like in the city of Longmont, where heavy spending and big-league dirty politics by curiously mainline GOP interests, on behalf of specific candidates, has reached remarkable levels. We talked about about what seems to be a concerted move at the local level to build out a bench of the next generation of Republican state (and higher) level candidates, which would help explain the outsize resources being brought into these small-time elections.
And a little creepy “anonymous” stuff on the side, too:

Relax, it didn’t contain the dreaded ‘white powder,’ but in the last few days several Longmont residents involved in local politics (not the GOP-bankrolled kind, mind you) have reported getting these odd hand-addressed envelopes stuffed with negative campaign material. There’s no return address, but the people who got it think it was sent this way to let them know that somebody, if you will, has theirs.
Seriously, is it really necessary to get all Fatal Attraction about a suburban municipal election? Get a grip, folks, and if we see any pet rabbits getting boiled we’re calling a foul.
