Colorado Political Draft: The Sleeper Picks

by: Colorado Pols

Fri Apr 23, 2010 at 09:00:00 AM MDT

Yesterday we suggested a scenario for a "Colorado Political Draft," with the ongoing NFL Draft as inspiration. We gave you our Top Five, and let you suggest your own draft choices.

Today, we're taking a look at the "Sleeper Picks." These are the picks that a team makes in the NFL Draft that initially have you scratching your head because you've never heard of them; but then the more you think about it, and the more you hear about the player and the rationale, the more you start to really like the selection.

With that in mind, check out our "Sleeper Picks" after the jump. For a refresher on the "guidelines" under which our picks are being made, check out yesterday's post.

Colorado Pols :: Colorado Political Draft: The Sleeper Picks
POLITICAL DRAFT: SLEEPER PICKS

1. Don Marostica, Director of Colorado Office of Economic Development (Republican)
This former legislator and Republican member of the Joint Budget Committee appeared to have tired of the GOP's unwillingness to really work on the state budget in favor of playing pure partisan politics. Marostica was a badly-needed rational and moderate voice in the increasingly far-right Colorado Republican Party, and running him out in favor of strict ideology did them no favors at the statehouse. A wealthy businessman with a real willingness to address Colorado's problems is exactly what Republicans need right now. If Marostica could make it through a GOP primary, he'd be a tough statewide opponent for any Democrat.

2. Mitch Morrissey, Denver District Attorney (Democrat)
Forget the name for a moment, and first consider the built-in advantages of the position: a) Great name ID because of Denver media, and b) Being in either the military or law enforcement can be a big advantage with voters. Morrissey has those natural advantages, but to another degree because of some of the high-profile cases his office has handled (like putting away cop killer Raul Garcia Gomez) and his national stature as a DNA expert. A "tough-on-crime" Democrat with a base in the most populous part of Colorado? That's a nice combination.

3. Hank Brown, Former Senator (Republican)
Brown might be too old (he turned 70 this year), but good gravy, check out that resume: Vietnam Veteran, State Senator, Congressman, U.S. Senator, President of University of Northern Colorado, President of University of Colorado. If Brown were 10 years younger, he could probably have any seat he wanted in this state.

4. Will Shafroth, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Department of Interior (Democrat)
Shafroth, the great-grandson of former Governor John Shafroth, ran a solid campaign in 2008 in the CD-2 Democratic Primary (won by Rep. Jared Polis), showing an ability to raise big money even in a race with two other heavy hitters (Polis and former state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald). There are a lot of similarities between Shafroth and Sen. Mark Udall, both in terms of old political connections and their appearance/persona as true "Westerners." Getting out of Boulder to work at the Interior Department helps him shed some "Boulder liberal" labels.

5. Mike Coffman, Congressman (Democrat)
Coffman has a great resume and currently represents a district that includes big portions of Jefferson, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, which would give him a big head start in a statewide race. But the weird thing about Coffman is that he's not nearly as impressive as the sum of his parts would suggest. An Iraq War veteran, former State Treasurer and former Secretary of State, Coffman should own the Colorado Republican Party today. But Republicans, for whatever reason, have never been all that interested in Coffman; remember, Coffman's career path always had him ending up as Governor, but he was pushed out of that race in 2005 quicker than a 100-pound Sumo wrestler. In theory, Coffman should be a strong statewide contender. In reality, there's just something missing -- he'd probably be more interesting as a Democrat.

Mitch Morrissey? are you people crazy?
Mitch is, according to boyles, part of the ritter/villafuerte/everyone else  cabal. ....he would be labeled kingpin in denver's sanuary city....would negate everything else.

Hank Brown could still win statewide hands down....running with or w/o party designation....

Mike Miles....doing fantastic work as superintendent of a small district south of the Springs...ethnic, smart, military background and effective....and not from denver.

Agreed on Brown, dwyer
He's one of the only politicians on the Republican side who has that kind of name recognition and bipartisan respect.

His only problem would be that he's a real moderate, and his own party activists might not see that as a plus.

If Hank Brown ever decided to run again for statewide office, I would probably vote for him depending on his opponent. That's how much respect I have for him.

Hank could take Hickenritter with both hands tied behind his back and a broken ankle
Let's examine why....

On prosperity

Is Hank the Godfather of Tea Party "thugs"?

Hank on corrupt Democrat theories

[ Parent ]
Yeah
Instead you get stuck with a crappy candidate like McInnis, who Hick will beat handily.

[ Parent ]
Mike Miles?
Nice guy, nice resume, but what could possibly convince you that he could win a major statewide race after how poorly he did in 2004? You can't do that bad in a statewide race and come back again, because you'd never convince meaningful supporters and donors that you can do it.

And as we've said over and over here, not being from the Denver Metro area is NOT an advantage. 10 years ago, maybe, but not anymore -- not when the majority of the voters are in a handful of counties in and around Denver.

[ Parent ]
I thought I got to make a sleeper pick. He is my sleeper pick, for god's sake.
He didn't run statewide in 2004, he was on the democratic ballot in the primary, as I recall.  Salazar had the money and the reputation.  Salazar was an extraordinary candidate. but  Salazar was also  the pick of the party establishment.  As I recall, people voted for Salazar because they thought he could win...because he had already won statewide.  People liked Miles, but didn't think he could win.

As for Denver, that was then, this is now.  Running against Denver may well be part of the republican playbook.

I didn't know cp was going to jump in and critique.  Hell, I can do conventional wisdom...in my sleep.  So what is the point of this exercise?

No harm intended
We just have trouble seeing why Miles would be a contender for a statewide race after how poorly he did in 2004.

Miles had one really big problem -- he couldn't raise money. People forget that Miles had been running for the seat for at least a year before Salazar got in. He had the Democratic race all to himself for a long time, and he had raised only about $30k. There are a lot of state legislative candidates who easily raise more than that in a year, so he has no excuse there.

A big part of being a good candidate is the ability to fundraise, no matter your opponent. Look at the CD-2 Primary in 2008, for example; Will Shafroth raised a lot of money despite the presence of two other good candidates in Jared Polis and Joan Fitz-Gerald.

[ Parent ]
Fair enough.
Do you have any insight on why Miles had so much trouble raising money?  I do remember that some felt that he should have tried for a spot in the state legislature first and then gone state-wide.

I was impressed with him...first the resume and then the speech at the State convention.

[ Parent ]
me too
I loved Miles back in 2004.  I think he was a great lesson for progressives:  a great message and a great messenger still needs to have enough money.  Not the most, just enough.  I think we've seen that the last few years.  When decent candidates have enough to compete with well-funded candidates, they win.

[ Parent ]
For a real sleeper pick
how about Sal Pace? He has political connections all over the state from his work to elect Salazar and other western slope candidates, his election to leadership as a freshman demonstrates his political savvy, and plus he is just really personable and smart. Admittedly he doesn't have the elected resume of the others, but I think he would do surprisingly well regardless. He's not from the Metro area which would be a liability if he weren't from Pueblo, which is still a front range town that has the same blue-collar make up as other large counties (thinking Adams here). Maybe a long shot, but these are called the sleepers for a reason, right?

Mike Johnston
(already posted this earlier.. but it bears repeating)

-Adorable (sorry the guy is a cutie patootey)
-Family guy
-Has the Obama connection
-Smart. Smart. Smart. I never see him stumble on an issue and he  absorbs and listens to what people say and actually engages them instead of just sitting there nodding. (one of the few who actually pays attention in committee instead of twittering away)
-young and likeable
-his 'inexperience' is beneficial in this economic climate.. He doesn't have that political baggage
-He's ambitious and out of a lot of politicians that I have met, his heart is really in the right place (yeah corny I know)

Not to mention, this guy hasn't even been in office a year and he has a volunteer army that would put any of the teaparty astro-turfers to shame

Attorney Caplis on the radio show said, seriously, that he expects Tim Tebow to be President of the United States. .On the god  loves tebow and the republicans ticket, no doubt.

You have Mike Coffman listed as "(Democratic)"?
Yeah... that's not gonna happen.

But you're right, he's missing something.

"Why not do the right thing for the American people, even though it's not exactly what we want." - Speaker Boehner

Coffman
Thank you for mentioning him - he's terrific and a mentor of mine - we would have the Governorship right now, had he ran in 2006

More than any Republican, Coffman is a hard worker who knows how to win

Regarding other seats, I think he's gonna stay in CD6 forever

TABOR4LIFE

we would have the Governorship
Yeah, yeah, Coffman would've beat Ritter, and McInnmis would've beat Udall. Sure.

In a parallel universe, Republicans still run things in Colorado! Dream big, MAH!

[ Parent ]
For once, I think I agree with Ali
I certainly think Mike would have given Ritter a far better run than Both Ways Bob did, especially after the Holtzman assassination squad got through with him.   But the powers that be shunted Mike aside.
But beware, Ali -- Mike is no "TABOR4LIFE" fanatical, drown-gummint-in-a-bathtub type.
He fully understands TABOR's contribution to the mess Colorado is in.  He didn't back Ref C but did propose other reform measures

[ Parent ]
politely disagree
What matters is that Coffman is willing to take some serious ARROWS for the conservative cause

I recall his tenure as State Treasurer, when he took over the financial books of the Elizabeth and St Vrain School Districts, due to their financial problems (which the State Treasurer has the authority to do, in some scenarios under CRS laws) --- at the time, that seemed to be a political-suicide move, but it was the 'right' thing to do

Coffman is a conservative and he lives by it - all Republicans know it - that's why he is one of the most popular Republicans amongst the grassroots and likely why The Establishment (the liberal wing of the GOP that is anti-TABOR) despises him
