Colorado GOP Brass Backs Romney, While “Tea Party” Declares War

We noted on Tuesday that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will attend a fundraiser in Denver next week, co-hosted by much of the top-level Colorado Republican brass. Their support stands in contrast to polling that shows Romney is rapidly losing ground in this state to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who was in Aspen recently collecting […]

What Andrea Merida Was Mis-Spending Our Tax Money On

( – promoted by c rork) Now that Merida says she’s (maybe?) giving the $8,000 she overspent back to the district, I think it’s worth looking at just what she was spending that money on. I was pretty busy yesterday so I didn’t get a chance to look at the records and weigh in, but […]

Coffee with Dave Chandler

This might be a lucky year for Dave Chandler. The former Green Party activist and 2006 Congressional candidate is making a run for Arvada’s Mayor. Normally, we wouldn’t give any political aspirant with ties to a third party a good shot at any office; they simply don’t have the fundraising and volunteer network to be able to compete even with those who have subtle connections to the major parties. That said, in an election year without much excitement and without an incumbent candidate, Chandler has a better shot at the Mayor’s office than he’s ever had in any race before. Chandler’s been involved in Arvada politics longer, even, than he’s been a voice of the Green Party in Jeffco. We’ll be profiling Chandler soon, but in the mean time, you can catch up with him for yourself over coffee if you’re into that kind of thing.

From the Chandler for Arvada Mayor campaign:

Dave Chandler, Arvada Mayoral Candidate is hosting Saturday morning coffee meetings at Two Rivers Coffee, 7745 Wadsworth Blvd. in Arvada. (77th Drive and Wadsworth next to Vitamin Cottage), 10 -11 am. The meetings will be every Saturday through October.

Merida Elects to Repay Overages, Raises Questions About DPS Accounting Practices

DPS board member Andrea Merida today retracted a previous statement that she would not repay more than $8,000 in excess spending. Yesterday, Merida claimed that she would not reimburse the district because her spending was for “legitimate community engagement kinds of things and there is a lot of professional development lumped into that.” The unrepentant […]

Merida Money Mismanagement Makes News

From a story that EdNews Colorado broke this morning, 4 out of 7 DPS board members spent more than the $5000 they are allotted for a fiscal year. That includes board president Nate Easley, who overspent by $462.84, and board treasurer Mary Seawell, who overspent by $452.56. The fourth overspender was Arturo Jimenez, who exceeded […]

Gardner: “Job Creation” Means…Whatever I Want It To Mean

In Rep. Cory Gardner’s regular periodic email to constituents last week, we took note of something that might help people understand the enormous divide between the respective “job creation” proposals from President Barack Obama vs. Republicans in Congress. According to a news report in The Washington Post last week, President Obama intends to press Congress […]

Schultheis, Conservatives Unwittingly Make Case for Gay Marriage

Former State Sen. Dave Schultheis was never particularly vague in his beliefs about unwed mothers (famously “wishing that they would get AIDS“) or the evils of gay marriage, which is why were particularly interested to see this recent Facebook page from the great foot-in-mouth Senator. If you follow the link, it takes you to a […]

Who Wants to Be a Colorado Supreme Court Justice?

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock announced today that Colorado Supreme Court Justice Alex Martinez has accepted the position of Manager of Safety for the City and County of Denver. That’s good news for the Supreme Court Nominating Commission, which finally has something to do. Martinez has served on the Colorado Supreme Court since being appointed by […]

BREAKING: Bright Colorado Initiative Makes It to Ballot

POLS UPDATE: Full release from the Bright Colorado campaign after the jump. Says Proposition 103 organizer Sen. We are committed to a person-to-person campaign for our kids […]

Too big to fail – too big to be held accountable

Kennedy Named Deputy Mayor

From the logical appointments of the day department, here’s this press release from Denver Mayor Michael Hancock:

Mayor Hancock Appoints Cary Kennedy as Deputy Mayor

DENVER – Mayor Michael B. Hancock today announced the appointment of Cary Kennedy as Deputy Mayor for the City and County of Denver. Currently serving as the City’s Chief Financial Officer, Kennedy will stand second in the mayoral line of succession, acting as chief executive when the Mayor is unavailable.

“Cary is a natural fit to serve as our Deputy Mayor due to the nature of her position as CFO and her in-depth knowledge of the city,” Mayor Hancock said. “Having grown up in Denver, she has a rich understanding of the inner workings and a deep love of the city that will serve this administration and the people of Denver well.”

Folks, while the Hancock administration has already had its fair-share of ups-and-downs, Hancock’s appointment of Kennedy to the CFO position still shines as a great decision. It’s smart for Hancock to continue to showcase Cary’s role in the administration, and even if Deputy Mayor only matters nominally – the position, after all, carries no additional duties or powers – it’s a smart move for both Hancock and Kennedy. Cary remains extremely popular with progressives around the state, and the more high-profile a position she’s given in the administration, the more Hancock can be conservative on some issues with far less electoral discomfort.

The appointment also paves the way for Kennedy, often rumored to still be planning an eventual run for Governor, to have an easier route to the Denver Mayor’s office. We expect Hancock will be able to serve for the next 4 (and likely 8) years without any controversy, but if he doesn’t, Kennedy will inherit the Mayor’s office both skillfully and naturally. Kennedy will also easily be able to make the case that she’s the natural candidate to succeed Hancock in the next Mayoral election without an incumbent.

WIth appointments like these, Kennedy may still be Governor. That Kennedy can continue to be extremely politically relevant even after losing a statewide election is a testament to her skill and support base. Cary continues to improve upon her profile as a talented lawmaker and an incredible addition to any office. She’s now on a direct path to become Mayor if she wants it, provided she has the patience.  Of course, it wouldn’t be a stretch for Denver’s first female Mayor to become Colorado’s first female governor. We’re sure Kennedy knows it, too.

The press release in its entirety.

Perry Knows “Gratitude”–So Does Alex Cranberg?

Here’s a fascinating New York Times story for Colorado readers (we’ll explain why in a moment): Two years ago, John McHale, an entrepreneur from Austin, Tex., who has given millions of dollars to Democratic candidates and causes, did something very unusual for him: he wrote a $50,000 check to a Republican candidate, Rick Perry, then […]

KFKA’s Oliver advocates government dismantlement but forgets about it when Gardner jumps on board

(Gardner’s adventures in AM radio continue – promoted by Colorado Pols) “The Amy Oliver Show made national news,” Amy Oliver told her KFKA listeners Aug. 11, reading the headline from The Hill, a Washington-DC blog, “GOP lawmaker OK with dismantling DOT.” “That’s not exactly what he said,” Oliver explained to her radio audience, apparently forgetting […]

Democrats Hold On In Wisconsin Recall Round Two

McClatchy wraps up the coverage from Madison (for now): The six-month saga that was Wisconsin’s state Senate recall movement ended Tuesday with Democrats retaining two seats – and Republicans still in possession of a week-old, razor-thin 17-16 majority. On the fourth election day of the summer, two Democratic incumbents were victorious. Sen. Jim Holperin beat […]

Texas Gov. Rick Perry: An Opposition Campaign Primer

Ah! Fresh meat! That’s what’s on the mind of political pundits this week as they come down off the high of the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames. With nothing to report until–well–something unpredictable happens, or until the Iowa caucuses in January, the media and blogosphere will gush with pedantics about this outsider to the GOP […]

Who Fragged Dan Maes, Revised History Edition

It piqued our curiosity when we heard the book was coming out in June–as the Durango Herald’s Joe Hanel reports, 2010 GOP gubernatorial nominee Dan Maes has some new theories on what happened to him, and his (nominal) party’s chances in the governor’s race last year: Maes blames part of his campaign’s collapse on tea […]

What Happened to Tim Pawlenty?

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty began campaigning for the Republican nomination for President as soon as the 2008 race ended with Barack Obama victorious. T-Paw was thought to be a strong potential candidate, a favorite among the Republican establishment as a popular politician from an important midwestern state. So what happened? How did Pawlenty go […]

Tancredo Disses Rick Perry. Hard.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry moved closer to his expected presidential run today, and 2010 Colorado gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo wants you to know that Perry is not, and be assured that Tancredo of all people knows how to pick ’em, a “true conservative.” Writing at Politico today: Perry is eager to separate himself from his […]

No Real Election Battles in JeffCo This Cycle

Political observers itching for a municipal-level fight following the fanfare surrounding Denver’s recent Mayoral election should turn away from Jeffco this cycle.

We wish we could say that the 2011 municipal elections in all of Jefferson County’s cities would be the stuff of excitement and intrigue. We wish we could say that there would be an old-fashioned political brawl for Mayor in places like Golden, Lakewood, Arvada and Wheat Ridge. We wish we could say that.

Unfortunately, though, while recall elections in Wisconsin may attract millions of dollars in out-of-state attention and flames of hostility are fueled by congressional gridlock, Jeffco politics this cycle are a far cry from Tea Party tensions in Washington and around the country. We’d be lucky if any of Jeffco’s cities garnered 1/10th of the excitement of Denver’s otherwise milquetoast 2011 municipal race. Unfortunately, we don’t think even that will happen.

Perhaps that’s a good thing. While municipal elections are too often characterized by angry uprisings from groups of citizens enraged over stop lights and zoning laws, in Jefferson County, at least, they’re also markedly non-partisan. Sure, both progressive and libertarian concepts are often fleshed out at the local level, but because Mayors and City Councilors run without a party identifier attached to their name, political tensions from Washington and the state legislature rarely spill-over into city issues.

It’s because of this nonpartisan nature that, while they may have a fundamental distrust of government as a whole, voters in places like Lakewood and Arvada are still reasonably satisfied with their city government. This satisfaction means that those associated with the status quo in all of Jeffco’s cities are far more likely to sail to re-election. Voters simply do not pay attention to city government unless things are going horribly wrong. While Jefferson County has been hit by economic hardship as badly as any county of its size and makeup, voters have no reason to direct their displeasure at local government this cycle.

It is for this reason that few of the Mayor’s races in any of Jeffco’s cities are seriously challenged in their re-election efforts.
