Erik Hansen: Gil Reyes Must Step Down

Following on the heals of a vast series of corruption investigations in Adams County and a State of Colorado investigation, Adams County Commissioner Erik Hansen today called on elected Assessor Gil Reyes to resign.

Adams County Commissioner Erik Hansen quote regarding Assessor Gil Reyes…

“It is my belief that it is time for Adams County Assessor Gil Reyes to step down. It is clear from the investigation by the State Division of Property Taxation that he has broken Colorado law and given unfair tax breaks to campaign contributors. Because Reyes has lost the trust of the citizens of Adams County, it is time for him to do the right thing and resign.”

Remaining silent were two fellow County Commissioners, one the preceding Adams Co. assessor.

Having lost the trust of citizens and investors, Gil Reyes corruption is the latest stink to emanate from what could be a key front for Colorado’s next century of growth.

Local citizens and other commercial property owners not “in the know” were cheated by Assessor Reyes who took campaign contributions, then quietly kept low the taxes of his contributors.

Obviously Reyes developed a network ala Governor Blago. But just which property managers, real estate lawyers, brokers and accountants fed Reyes his bevy of campaign collections?

These crimes likey crossed state boundaries, a federal investigation is likely in the works at the U.S. Attorneys office.

These crimes are no different then the local hedge fund CEO who was named in Federal Court for making over $5 million on his insider knowledge of Apache Energy M&A or the thug that steals your grandmothers purse in LODO.

  1. Taxable values of homes owned by Lloyd Land and his daughter have been unchanged since 2005, while neighbors’ homes grew $200,000 and $350,000 in taxable value. (Andy Cross, The unwashed lame stream Denver daily)

    snip….

As a result, the county is losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue each year on properties where records list Assessor Gil Reyes as the account manager who opted to “adjust” their values downward.

The review of assessments on properties owned by top contributors to Reyes’ campaigns found that his leading donor, a California-based warehouse company, has won reductions in taxable value totaling $23 million on 11 buildings. Those reductions saved the company more than $800,000 in property taxes this year

  2. that you wrote almost as much as you cut and pasted. Very uncommon for you. And, I agree with you and the Adams commish that Reyes needs to go
