GOP Governor Disaster Could Topple Ticket

We’ve talked before about the negative effects that could affect the entire Republican ticket given their meltdown in the Governor’s race. Today MSNBC takes a look at the carnage and offers a sobering historical lesson for Republicans: There’s at least one previous case of GOP intra-party turmoil in one race spilling over into down-ballot races. […]

Big Line Updated

We’ve updated The Big Line after some admitted confusion over how we would list Tom Tancredo’s new Party affiliation. This is the first time we can remember that we’ve ever listed an American Constitution Party candidate on the line. Tancredo’s entry into the Governor’s race may have another unintended consequence beyond all but ensuring that […]

Markey raised $530,000 in second quarter

(More solid information from one of our most serious polsters, Bob Moore.   – promoted by Voyageur) Democratic incumbent Betsy Markey raised $530,000 in the second quarter, her second straight reporting period over half a million, her campaign told me this morning. That brings her total for the 2009-10 campaign to more than $2.2 million, […]

Hickenlooper Responds To “Sanctuary City” Tancredo Canard

As the Colorado Independent’s Joseph Boven reports: Democratic candidate for governor John Hickenlooper defended himself last week against mounting accusations from Republicans that, as mayor, he has run Denver as a so-called sanctuary city, where illegal immigrants are directly and indirectly protected against federal immigration laws and possible deportation. It’s a charge that has gained […]

At Least He’s Not Your Attorney General

Stay classy, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. Convicted murder Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed by firing squad today in Utah, and Shurtleff decided it would be a good idea to provide live Tweets of the execution: A solemn day. Barring a stay by Sup Ct, & with my final nod, Utah will use most extreme […]

Breaking — Steve King to speak at Loveland rally Saturday

(In your face, Cory Gardner! – promoted by Colorado Pols) Iowa Rep. Steve King, who was disinvited to a Cory Gardner fundraiser and Loveland tea party rally after remarks earlier this week on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show, will appear at a different event in Loveland Saturday, his office confirmed to me a short while […]

Steve King’s Got a Point

Revisiting this week’s big story about a canceled fundraiser for GOP CD-4 candidate Cory Gardner, ably reported by the Fort Collins Coloradoan’s Bob Moore over the last couple of days–apparently, not even the key figure in the incident, Rep. Steve King of Iowa and his hotly controversial remarks about Barack Obama ‘favoring’ black people, understands […]

Northern Colorado Tea Party cancels Rep. Steve King appearance

(Has she checked with “Swastika Guy?” – promoted by Colorado Pols) UPDATE:I talked with Rep. Steve King this afternoon. He criticized Gardner and the NoCo Tea Party for canceling him, even though he says they didn’t disagree with what he said. The Gardner campaign begs to differ. And King says he’s coming to Colorado this […]

No surprise: Markey will support “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) I sometimes shake my head when reading national political journals writing about the 4th Congressional District. A lot of the coverage is built on a narrative of having a “vulnerable” incumbent, and everything is seen through that prism. While Rep. Betsy Markey and Republican nominee Cory Gardner certainly will […]

Tipping — Best (or worst!) word of mouth per $ spent!

(Having grown up in my grandma’s bar and working every job in the B/R business, front and back of the house, I absolutely believe in judging people by their tipping habits.  Shout out to my brothers and sisters clocking the sub minimum wage. – promoted by Danny the Red (hair)) One of my adult offspring […]

Colorado Democratic State Assembly – live blog

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) 8:36 – Finally found the press area and am set up! Pretty low key so far with most people sitting and waiting and some milling around. Lines at the county register booths are very short. Only two groups handing out lit on the way in was a union group […]

GOP CD 4 assembly results

It’s all Cory Gardner. With 590 ballots available (and one not voting), Gardner took 359 votes, Dean Madere had 120 votes and Tom Lucero took 110. At least 177 votes were required to make the Aug. 10 primary ballot. Lucero congratulated Gardner after the results were announced: “Betsy Markey is our goal now.”

Why Republicans Lose, Part CXVIII

Sure, there are people who there who claim that your hosts harbor a bias this way or that way on the political figures we discuss and the issues of the day. And to the extent that we are not and have never once claimed to be impartial journalists, or anything other than the shadowy cabal […]

Winners and Losers of the 2010 Colorado legislative session

With the 2010 Colorado legislative session coming to a close, here is a list of winners and losers among your Colorado State Representatives and Senators–who stood up to do right by their constituents and our state’s future, versus those who devoted the session to pandering and disingenuous partisan politics. We are proud of the hard […]

Ryan Frazier, Occasional Councilman

As the Denver Post’s Lynn Bartels reports: Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier had the worst attendance record of any of the 10 council members from May 2006 through April. Frazier, a Republican running for Colorado’s 7th Congressional District seat, missed 16 council meetings and 12 executive sessions out of 100 meetings during that four-year span. […]

Smarter Jane Norton: Now “Tracker” Aware

As the Lamar Ledger reported Thursday, Senate candidate Jane Norton is at least aware now that Democratic “trackers”–or others willing to report on/record what’s actually said–are in the room: Norton, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, was campaigning at The Perk in Lamar on May 4, telling the assembled crowd that the state of the […]

Big Line Updated

The Big Line has been updated now that Democrat Andrew Romanoff’s fundraising numbers for Q1 have been reported. The biggest changes are on The Line are for Senate, Attorney General and CD-4… SENATE LINE This race has really come down to three people now: Sen. Michael Bennet for the Democrats and Jane Norton and Ken […]

Post provides donor history on GOP contributor who was angry at Markey over health-care vote

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) At the end of March, The Denver Post reported that a GOP donor sent Republican congressional candidate Cory Gardner a $1,000 check with a note, “You can thank Betsy Markey’s vote [for the health-care law] for this check.” This story was included in a Post article, and repeated in […]

My Interview with Tom Lucero

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Over the last several weeks, both the local and national media have been aflutter over the tough re-election race faced by Betsy Markey in Colorado’s Fourth Congressional District.  For local pundits and political insiders, however, that comes as little surprise because most casual observes knew that even before Markey […]

History of GOP donor omitted from Post article

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) A March 28 Denver Post article offered up a misleading tidbit that I should have pointed out earlier–before it spread across the country. I’m not referring to the headline of the Post article, which was bad enough. It read “Markey a Polarizing Force in the 4th Congressional District.” The […]

Colorado’s 2010 “Egregious Eight”

(It’s the scowl-offs – promoted by Colorado Pols) Update: Ladies and gentlemen, the “Foul-Mannered Four”–with a twist! * Dave Schultheis – 45 votes (20.74%) * Doug Bruce – 40 votes (18.43%) * Kevin Lundberg – 25 votes (11.52%) * Jane Norton – 22 votes (10.14%) * Scott McInnis – 22 votes (10.14%) That’s right, Jane […]

Interview with Dean Madere

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) For political observers, the Republican primary contest in Colorado’s Fourth Congressional district is a foregone conclusion. State representative Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) is the run-away favorite to challenge incumbent Democrat Betsy Markey in November. Gardner carries the blessing of the national party as one of the RNC’s ‘Young Guns,’ a […]

Markey’s Health Care Vote Helps Her Re-Election

The Denver Post ran an article over the weekend arguing that Congresswoman Betsy Markey has become a polarizing force within her district in light of her recent ‘yes’ vote for health care reform.  Indeed, conventional wisdom emerging from her district holds that Markey has consigned herself to only one term in Congress because the majority […]

Colorado’s 2010 “Extreme 16”

(Is that Bob Schaffer in the dunce cap? – promoted by Colorado Pols) 9:53PM: Your “Egregious 8,” ladies and gentlemen: Dave Schultheis Doug Bruce Shawn Mitchell Kevin Lundberg Scott Renfroe Jane Norton Scott McInnis Cory Gardner See you next week, when we’ll narrow it down to the “Foul-Mannered Four.” In the spirit of the NCAA […]
