Caught!

  • by: Colorado Pols

After weeks of digging, apparently, The Rocky Mountain News has uncovered one of the identities of the people behind ColoradoPols.com.

Colorado Pols is the work of many people on different sides of the aisle, and only one of those identities have been revealed (the others will not be, unless some news entity finds it on their own).

5280.com has the story. Here’s the Rocky Mountain News story.

More fallout…

From The National Journal:

MSM VS. THE BLOGS: Was The Denver-Area Press Threatened By All The Scoops Colorado Pols Has Been Getting? (Does The Pope Wear A Funny Hat?)

Having “traced e-mails” from a pseudonym of the heretofore anonymous Colorado Pols founder, Rocky Mountain News’ Jim Tankersley and M.E. Sprengelmeyer on 7/23 identified that person as Jason Bane, a journalist, a registered Dem, and aide to Denver DA Mitch Morrissey’s ’04 campaign. Bane “admitted responsibility” for the site, which he runs with 2 others, including a GOPer. Bane: “Certainly I have had a lot of involvement with it. It’s not my blog.”

Colorado Pols noted the article when it was posted on 7/22 p.m., under the header “Caught!”: “Colorado Pols is the work of many people on different sides of the aisle, and only one of those identities have been revealed (the others will not be, unless some news entity finds it on their own).”

  1. Todd’s right – it’s no big deal and doesn’t change anything.

Of course, if it had been revealed that DLJ was one of the dead guvs….well, then I think we’d have a story on our hands….

    Keep up the good work.

  2. I disagree, it does change things.  I don’t think it’s a big deal but it’s not hard to figure which way the wind blows around here.  It’s now been confirmed and the anoniminity of other contributors may hurt credibility.  Just because someone says it’s both sides of the aisle doesn’t make it so; as the Pols are fond of saying – it’s all about perception and the perception changes with this news.  I wish the Rocky wasn’t so overzelous, the anoniminity made it better… now people will be able to dismiss postings as partisan hackery and point to the outing.

Oh well, I’ll still read.  I admire your site and you guys still rule.

  3. Well Alva, you can take solace in the fact that the story is in the Saturday Rocky, the least read paper of the week.  Keep it up though, it will still be a great site.

  4. Well Alva, you can take solace in the fact that the story is going to run in the Saturday Rocky, the least read paper of the week.  Still my first read in the morning, still the best.

  5. Lame, Rocky, lame. Work on reporting some real news (for a change) instead of trying to figure out who writes some blog (a good blog, but still a blog). Maybe the Rocky Mountain Snooze can do some real digging and find out where I put my wallet last night.

  6. Here’s something candyraver and I can stand together on.  Alva – how could you!  A Democrat!?

I think the only thing this might change is Alva’s ability to get a story.  Any comments, Dead Guvs?

  7. If you look back into the archive, there is a section where it speculates that Jason Bane might get promoted in the Mayor’s office.  Just thought that was interesting.

  8. First Deep Throat, now Alva… what’s this world coming to???

But isn’t it a little ironic that a mainstream reporter scooped a blog?

  9. Jason has been invaluable from the start, and he’ll continue to be. Without his technical wherewithal, we’d be a few hapless bipartisan insiders trading our gossip over beer as opposed to sharing it with all of you. Jason can now act as a firewall against further exposure, so we’re all (believe it or not) breathing a sigh of relief.

You’ll continue to see that same witty-yet-relevant content gracing our pages each day, and I’m hopeful that Jason will keep his hand in despite any injuries sustained leaping bravely on our grenade.

And as for these Rocky Mountain News super-sleuths, well, took you long enough. Funny stories along the way include when a reporter  was “certain” we were a bunch of Virginia Republicans, because Network Solutions (where coloradopols.com is privately registered) is in Virginia. And according to publicly available records, I died in 1917, Alva in 1922, and Jesse in 1942. Something’s clearly not right with that.

  10. I’m sorry, but Alva Adams was Democratic governor. Duh.

But by Rocky Logic, I would imagine that the true James is 5 years younger than Alva, and Jesse is 20 years older.  Or maybe using birthdates – who know what they could think up.

As long as you still report on what matters, people won’t care.

  11. No big deal.  Doesn’t change my site viewing habits.  I come here very frequently to see what’s happening in my state, and will continue to do so.  This is the best resource out there for local matters.  Keep up the good work!

  12. It is always fun figuring out who the wizard behind the curtain is, but its anticlimatic b/c nobody really cares who operates this site.

…And there is NO way Mike Huttner is COS.  I’d bet my anonomity on it.

  13. As predicted last spring, one of the Dead Govs. has been outed, but I’m not sure which one. It will be interesting to see whether these guys hang out together and someone will connect the dots. Shouldn’t be too hard.

Good work by the Rocky. I’m sure the reporter got a rush from doing the story, which is the fun in journalism.

Suddenly, we’re told a bunch of guys from both sides of the ailes are involved, not just the 3 dead govs. And Jason says it’s not his blog, but then we’re told he’s the techie behind the site. If a bunch of people were involved, the word would be out as to who is behind the site. So I’m thinking there are only two or three people.

Why does it matter? I like to know who’s behind a blog or message board. Certainly, this blog is a great success and the outing of Jason won’t change its readership nor its content. Naming all involved won’t, either. It’s just a matter of time.

Anyway, congrats on a successful blog and fun mystery story.

    Don

  14. Here are some dots to consider:

Jason Bane+ Daniel Brogan+Jeralyn Merritt all of whom are involved in the very well done 5280 blog. Merritt runs a great TalkLeft blog. How  she finds time to practice law beats me, because she writes good stuff even though I disagree with much of it.

Ready for the Denver Post head:

Brogan and Merritt deny hiding behind Coloradopols.com; Jason Bane’s just a friend, they say

  15. Hey,
    Whatever…
It is still fun to read the posts provided by the many anonymous posters.  Who really cares who starts a speculative thread?  It is never over ’til the fat lady sings anyway.

Tankersley, next time you’re bored, contemplate what tasks you would train monkey butlers to do.

  16. Nice to see that blogging really does mirror real life. Self promotion and spreading rumors about yourself or your bosses abound.

Mike Huttner – if you really want Hick’s COS job, stop trying to push the rumor mill on here and just apply for it!!

Regarding Jared – yes Mike! We know your boy has higher aspirations. SOS sounds like a good stepping stone to his/your ultimate goal of running for Gov.
