We almost missed this one but it’s definitely worth a mention–KJCT-TV reported a week ago:
Cable talk show host Glenn Beck had people all over the country fired up on Friday.
That included a large viewing party for the show here in Grand Junction, where an estimated 150 supporters gathered at Bassett Furniture for what was being called “We Surround Them” Friday.
The purpose of the event was to showcase how Americans can come together and stand up to their government no matter where they stand politically.
Before Beck’s show, State Senator Josh Penry spoke to the crowd via DVD message.
When the show started, the crowd seemed to mirror the talk show host, alternating at times between tears and laughter…
If any of you watched the March 13th Glenn Beck Fox News special “We Surround Them,” you already know Beck was crying. But handlers of Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, who introduced the broadcast to Grand Junction supporters described above, should probably have paid attention to what Beck was saying:
We are a country that is headed towards socialism, totalitarianism, beyond your wildest dreams. I have to tell you: I’m doing a story tonight that I wanted to debunk – these FEMA camps – I’m tired of hearing about them – you know about them? – I wanted to debunk them. We’ve now for several days done research on them. I can’t debunk them! If you trust our government, it’s fine. If you have any kind of fear that we might be heading towards a totalitarian state: look out. Buckle up..
Wow–we haven’t checked a complete transcript to see if black helicopters were mentioned, but it looks like they might as well have been. We’ve heard that “We Surround Them Friday” was heavily attended by members of the conspiracist John Birch Society and supporters of fringe presidential candidate Lyndon LaRouche–both of whom are generally quite receptive to warnings, the more shrill the better, that we are headed toward “socialism, totalitarianism, beyond your wildest dreams” and secret FEMA prison camps. Aliens, too.
But the question is, does Josh Penry believe this bug-eyed insanity? We assume, like “Swastika Guy,” that the answer is no. But, just like with “Swastika Guy,” you have to ask the question: why is he sharing a stage with this?

from an alcoholic Mormon?
Poor Haners…your Church sure found a gem in Glenn… 🙂
He sounds like the reincarnation of Bob Enyart…
Fear is the only issue the Republicans have left. Since they don’t believe government has a role in righting our economy or just about anything else, they don’t have any constructive policy positions so they turn to their old standby – fear.
All Beck is trying to do is scare people by making wild accusations about “FEMA camps” and other assorted pronouncements that are, at best, loosely tied to a warped reality. He has nothing to say about how we rebuild our infrastructure, revamp entitllements like social security so those programs are solvent or how to get the economy moving again. He doesn’t believe government should exist so he must talk about something other than public policy. Fear is his substitute but it solves nothing.
The tragedy is that young Republican leaders like Sen. Penry have bought into this kind of tactic. I don’t think this bodes well for a Republcian resurgence.
… assumes he hasn’t been creepy all along.
I don’t think I’d ever celebrate Thanksgiving again. Especially if there are kids around.
I heard T. Martino announcin he’s moving to noon-3- does this mean we’re losing Glen Beck on Denver talk radio?
I mean- a man’s gotta have a dream.
that people stop giving Penry the benefit of the doubt. His ideology is simply far right reactionary extremism. His support for loons like Beck and Janet “Bestiality” Rowland should put all of Colorado on notice. Like the proverbial iceberg, what you see on the surface, what he wants you to believe, belies what is beneath the surface. And just as The Daily Sentinel’s former publisher, George Orbanek, found out, Penry’s facade is far from the reality of who he is and what he represents. Anyone who has watched Penry over the years should already know that a person with an ego and ambition like Penry’s, is extremely dangerous to ALL the people of Colorado.
