The Colorado media’s inexplicable love affair with GOP State Chair Dick Wadhams continues this week as the head Republican cheese in Colorado is the featured guest on Adam Schrager’s “Your Show” on 9News.
Is 9News really already out of topics to discuss? How else to explain the affection showered upon Wadhams as “this week’s newsmaker.” Why is he a newsmaker, and why now?
Don’t ask why, silly! He’s Dick Wadhams!
We’ve said it before, but it still bears repeating: The Colorado Press absolutely LOVES them some Dick Wadhams. He is featured in more stories dealing with absolutely nothing other than the fact that he is Dick Wadhams – and he hasn’t done much of anything since arriving back in town a few months ago.
Wadhams is the Colorado version of Paris Hilton; all he has to do is fart and the press will interview him for an hour about it.
Listen, we’re not suggesting that Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak should get equal time; the media shouldn’t spend much time interviewing her, either. But does Wadhams have naked pictures of somebody at Gannett or what? There are a lot of other Colorado Republicans the media could talk to – they’d just rather play kissy face with Wadhams.

It’s pretty sad that the Republicans can’t actually elect somebody who is enough of a leader to be a voice for their party.
Talk about an under-achiever!
Uh, OQD, since when have you been singing Dobby’s refrain? I saw you say the same thing in another thread I think.
Because when this “decidedly red state” elects Dems to the governorship, U.S. Senate seat, most of its U.S. House delegation, and the majority of both houses of its state legislature, it’s a much sweeter victory than if a purple state (let alone a blue state) achieves such results.
….if registration data has any meaning. Problem is, the state turned blue because Republican leaders left us in the cold.
Like it or not, but Dick is somewhat of a celeb around here. Up until the Allen race, he seemed like he was the next Rove, but without the baggage and a success rate that extends beyond Colorado. You may not like him, but he’s good at what he does.
On top of that, at a time when Republicans are out of power in the leg and gov., with the Sen minority leader about to be term limited out…who else should the media go to for the republican perspective? And when a party is out of power, it’s easy for the minority party to make news….
Easier to make news, not easy. Sorry….
With all due respect, that’s complete poppycock (re: “when a party is out of power, it’s easy [easier] for the minority party to make news”).
Historically, the minority party is completely ignored by the press. That was the problem Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid faced a year ago – everybody complained that the Democrats were too quiet and weren’t doing anything to challenge the Administration; however, the exact opposite was true. The problem, though, was that even though Pelosi and Reid were holding press events daily — but unless you were watching C-SPAN, you never knew this.
Because the press historically ignores the minority party. And that’s why the love affair with Wadhams is even more disturbing…
People like to read about causes-and minority status is the embodiment of “causes”. Whether it’s good attention or negetive attention, the minority party usually doesn’t have problems getting press. Where’s the story when the governor announces a policy? Now, the response to the governor’s new policy…there’s a conflict, and a story.
So maybe it’s Harry Reid (before 2006, that is) calling Bush a moron, or Wadhams trying to make an issue over the property tax freeze-where ever there is a conflict, there is a story, and conflicts usually don’t arise within the majority party…unless your in the Republican party 🙂
It should bode well for the Judicial Accountability Act.
Dick Wadhams is a celebrity? Thats sad. The next rove? I assume you mean that he uses machiavellian tactics to trash the names of other candidates. Speaking of which, his defeat of Tom Daschle is hardly something to crow about. He beat an unpopular senator in an overwhelmingly republican state using what can adequately be described as nefarious tactics.
The allen race was his to lose, and lo and behold he lost it. Blame it on allen all you want, but the so-called “next rove” does not allow a little thing like a colonial french racist slur get in the way of an easy election victory. He screwed up.
If he is so good why did he effectively get demoted to the chairman of a state party of a flyover state? That speaks volumes to me about how good he is.
You think defeating Daschle was a cake walk? I’m not being snarky here, but have you ever worked on a campaign? Defeating an incumbent is hardly ever easy.
As Senate minority leaders typically have the capacity to raise large amounts of money, and Daschle did. Daschle had had strong opponents in the past, and had prevailed. Daschle’s opponent was someone who was defeated two years earlier by another senator who had less money, and in a more republican year.
Wadhams is good at what he does. Sure, he didn’t single handedly take down Daschle, but he played a part. If you want to underestimate him, that’s fine. But if I were a Democrat, I wouldn’t.
Question, in your opinion, who did Wadhams get demoted by exactly?
You’ve run two stories featuring Mr. Wadhams in a single day. As long as supposedly savvy political observers like you keep paying attention, seems like you are the ones getting played. Do you have a case of “dick envy?”
Is just a great name… the media would pay attention to Bill Ritter if he was named Dick Likker.
imagine going through high school with the name “Randy Gay.”
I have seen in my lifetime: Dick Scarr. The guy even had fancy letterhead with his name prominently displayed. that gave the office a good laugh.
With the “h” pronounced as a “k”
is Chi Suk Dick.
Read that again. A real person had this name. I used to work at a bank and that was the name of one of our depositors.
Chi Suk Dick. You just don’t forget a name like that.
That’s a good one
and he gets Col Pols attention because he gets media attention. The amusing part is how much it seems to bug you:
“There are a lot of other Colorado Republicans the media could talk to – they’d just rather play kissy face with Wadhams.”
Meow.
