All Eyes On CO-08 As Rep. Yadira Caraveo Clings To Narrow Lead

Yadira Caraveo and Gabe Evans

As the Colorado Sun reports, one of the nation’s most competitive congressional races is neck-and-neck the morning after as ballots continue to be counted in two politically polar opposite counties in the swing CO-08 race, conservative Weld County versus the larger swing suburban Adams County, each breaking strongly for Republican Gabe Evans and incumbent Rep. Yadira Caraveo respectively:

Caraveo was leading Evans by fewer than 4,000 votes — or about 1.5 percentage points — at 3 a.m., when the last returns were posted. The Associated Press estimates that reflects the tally of about 74% of the votes cast in the race.

There are still thousands — possibly tens of thousands — of 8th District ballots to be counted in Weld and Adams counties. The question for Evans is whether there are enough votes for him in Republican-leaning Weld County to overcome his deficit, without too many Caraveo votes in Democratic-leaning Adams County to counteract those or widen the congresswoman’s lead.

“We absolutely have a path,” Evans told his supporters at a watch party in Brighton late Tuesday. “We’re feeling very, very optimistic.”

As of this morning, Weld County does have more total ballots outstanding, but an unknown number of those ballots are outside the boundaries of CO-08. Adams has a larger population in the district and is breaking for Caraveo by double digits. Adams County vote centers were reportedly overrun last night with many in line for two hours or more to cast a ballot, and it’s those late voters that could put Caraveo over the top to stay.

But it’s too soon to know for sure, and it’s going to be close either way. We’ll update when either county updates their count through the day and evening.

    1. Caraveo is a better legislator than candidate.  She is a "workhorse not a showhorse" and has been an effective legislator who has represented CD8 quite well.  She is not the type of member that runs for the closest microphone…she quietly goes about the business of legislating.  Furthermore, she is more willing than than some other members of the Colorado delegation to meet with visiting constituents–and I think it is a good bet that she's not planning on using this seat as a launching pad to higher office.  "Great shakes"?  Maybe not.  "Damn Good Shakes"?  You bet.

  1. update on Denver NBC

    Yadira Caraveo 129,960
    Gabe Evans 127,541
    Chris Baum 4,214

78% expected votes in (Est. remaining 77,000)

    Adams 164,187 votes80.4% in
    Larimer 12,576 votes90.6% in
    Weld 87,577 votes71.3% in

    1. Thanks.  The media have been pretty bad in explaining what's outstanding, at least what I've seen (admittedly, I haven't done a deep dive, other than to occasionally look at the SOS's tallies, which is a frustrating website mostly)

        1. I did hear that, to 9news' credit.  And maybe it's too big of an ask to want a breakdown of CD8-only votes within a county that has multiple districts.

    1. Saw a tweet that said the following, for what it's worth and not by any means fact-checked by me:

My understanding is that there are approximately 37K Adams votes, about 3K or 4K Weld votes left IN CO-08. Plus maybe 500 or so left in Larimer.

  2. Per NBC:

    Caraveo – 145,148 (48.9%)

    Evans – 143,827 (48.4%)

87% of the vote in, approx. 44,000 votes left to count.

I'm sure the stump-jumpers in charge in those counties are mustering every finger and toe to get the job done sometime before they swear in the 119th Congress.

    1. If this holds and Evans wins, then people who are saying that Colorado avoided the rightward shift need to STFU.  It will mean that Colorado's congressional delegation will be made up of 4 Rs and 4Ds, despite the fact that it is decidedly a BLUE STATE.  Our blue congressional seats have way too many democrats stuffed into them.  The Republicans couldn't have gerrymandered this any better if they had been 100% in control of drawing the districts.  This is absurd.
