  1. How Right-Wing Disinformation Campaigns Work. Heather Cox-Richardson.

Whether or not you agree with the level of response the Biden administration has provided to those suffering in the fires, the pattern of using the media to establish a narrative that the administration is ignoring Americans when it clearly is not is almost exactly what happened with the East Palestine, Ohio, railway disaster in February 2023. Then, pro-Russian accounts promptly began to argue that the Biden administration was ignoring a disaster at home—when emergency personnel were on the ground immediately—in order to fund Ukraine’s war against Russia’s invasion.

Now, behavioral scientist Caroline Orr Bueno, a specialist in disinformation, noted that the X (Twitter) account that seeded the “Hawaii, not Ukraine” narrative was created just last month and that accounts associated with both Russia and China are amplifying the narrative that Biden has neglected Maui. It seems telling that the same right-wing “independent journalist” who went to East Palestine has flown into Maui to attack Biden’s response, showing up on Trump ally Steve Bannon’s “War Room.”

    1. I have two really good friends (Maui residents, including the previous Mayor of Maui) very involved in the relief effort.  They aren’t complaining about BIden.

    2. Yesterday, I watched Fox News during lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant. ( I had no choice, unless I sat on the other side of the room and put headphones on). The Fox talking heads peddled nonstop "Hunter Biden Scandal", and secondly, this absurd story that somehow, Biden is neglecting Hawaii in favor of Ukraine.

Not a peep about TFG's five indictments, or those of his 18 co-conspirators.

    3. When I say Right-Wing, that includes a bunch of Russian & Chinese dis-info accounts, Steve Bannon's fascist organization, working in concert with The Heritage Foundation.

Yes, the Heritage Foundation has been taken over by the MAGA right-wing.

Let's see what the US Supreme Court has to contribute.

    1. Regarding Mark Robinson's claim about a ruling clique of reptiles, let us recall that the late and great humorist, P. J. O'Rourke, did write "Republican Party Reptile."

      1. The Comet Pizza business and the Jewish space laser were crazy enough but the lizard people, too?

These people pride themselves on their skepticism about things like the moon landing, 9/11, and J.F.K., Jr. plane crash. But they believe this other stuff? WTF?

  2. I see our former University of Colorado visiting scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy is now booked in Fulton County jail. Great way to augment the profile and image of CU.  /s

      1. The Guardian reports that today's action involved BOTH Scott Hall and John Eastman.  Eastman’s bond is set at $100,000. Hall’s bond was set at $10,000.

Two others already have bond agreements — no word on when they will be processed.

    1. Eastman was arrested, but there was an existing agreement on bail, so I doubt his location is in the Fulton County Jail.

Eastman was the direct responsibility of the Bruce D. Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization.  University of Colorado – Boulder and the central administration of the University of Colorado signed off — but probably won't take a hit in the public's assessment of the University's overall image. [but if the football team doesn't improve … ]

  3. At Trump's Insane Clown Club meeting last week, topics discussed included how they can strike a match to the world economy, work on population control through widespread famine, and of course institute an authoritarian regime featuring rule by whim (or bribe) in the US through military force.

The proposed expansion of the tariff policy — which aides say is expected to be a central 2024 campaign plank — reflects how Trump is aiming to expand the power he wielded in the White House, eyeing sweeping authoritarian measures for his second term that range from deploying the military to fight street crime to purging the federal workforce.

Economists of both parties say Trump’s tariff proposal is extremely dangerous. Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a D.C.-based think tank, called the idea “lunacy” and “horrifying” and said it would lead the world’s other major economies to conclude the United States cannot be trusted as a trading partner.

Trump could use unilateral authority to exempt whatever countries he chooses from the automatic import tariffs. That would create enormous opportunities for influence-peddling, Posen said, following four years of a Trump presidency in which Saudi Arabia and other nations sought to steer Trump by frequenting his private businesses. “It’s a recipe for corruption,” Posen said. “They’ll decide that whoever cozies up to Trump, or whoever his commerce secretary is, will get the exception.”

Forget Putin-envy;  Trump is going full "Kim Jong Un"

    1. Once again, shocker, it’s not really about America Great Again but rather Trump’s private interests. Good lord when will his supporters ever learn.

    2. Trump doesn't do policy – It's all marketing.

It's irrelevant whether tariffs are good or bad. The only important question is whether it plays well with Trump's base. I guess keeping attention on Trump is also intentional.

      Well, Trump has several bases:
       – Newspaper reporters mainstream as well as wackos.
       – Billionaires & Millionaires (Car dealers are almost all millionaires.)
       – Federalist Society Judges
       – Insurrectionists
       – Christian Nationalists

    1. Nice … too bad they couldn't find enough space to say "one had a friend of Dad who said he had bone spurs."

Always was a bit suspect to have Trump boast of getting out of the draft due to bone spurs AND boast "I played football and baseball, sorry, but said to be the best bball player in N.Y. State"

Or maybe those bone spurs were what came between Trump and athletic reality … https://slate.com/culture/2020/05/donald-trump-baseball-high-school-nyma.html

  4. When are they going to move to impeach the judge in DC assigned to 1/6 case? I don't understand why none of the crackpots have done that yet.

Matt? Lauren? Empty G? Your 15 (more) minutes of Warholian fame has arrived.
