Romney's "Anglo-Saxon Heritage?" Do Tell!

  • by: Colorado Pols

A meeting between Mitt Romney campaign advisors and The London Daily Telegraph on the occasion of Romney’s trip to Europe this week is stoking outrage in multicultural England:

As the Republican presidential challenger accused Barack Obama of appeasing America’s enemies in his first foreign policy speech of the US general election campaign, advisers told The Daily Telegraph that he would abandon Mr Obama’s “Left-wing” coolness towards London.

In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”. [Pols emphasis]

Folks, we suppose this as-yet unnamed advisor could have been referring to some other aspect to one’s “Anglo-Saxon heritage” than, you know, ethnicity. After all, we’re all taught to uphold the values enshrined in American law, and the English common law it was derived from. Of course, Barack Obama was president of Harvard Law Review, so we’re thinking he knows something about the shared traditions in American and English law. Either way, it is a more polite topic of conversation in the UK than, say, how we kicked their ass in the Revolutionary War.

It’s possible that this advisor was talking about that stuff, but Barack Obama is a black man.

And most people will stop parsing the meaning of “Anglo-Saxon heritage” right there.

    2)  “When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That sameп»ї act governed the status of Obama Sr.’s children.”

    3) Romney’s dad was born and spent his childhood in Mexico, which, according to the Huckabee Refudiation above, would mean Romney’s view of Mexico is that they are outside staff. And the British are hosting the Olympics, which Romney saved when he was retroactively a Utah resident for tax purposes, but retroactively a Massachusetts resident for voting and candidacy purposes.

    4) Romney is arich, very very rich, white Anglo_Saxon police impersonator form Michigan, Massachussets, Utah.  Obama is different. It’s not because of the color of his skin, it’s just his racial and religious views.

  2. The advisor is talking explicitly about an ethnicity; saying “Anglo-Saxon heritage” isn’t like saying “shared history”…

This just carries on Romney’s own statement about Obama not understanding the American way at another level.  There’s been more than one dog-whistle statement coming from the Romney campaign and other prominent Republicans trying hard to avoid sounding like “Obama’s not white” while still conveying the “Obama’s not like us, if you know what I mean” message.

  3. Immigrated to the American colonies in 1752, I personally like to remind the Brits that we kicked their ass in the American War of Independence.

Of course, my ancestor was an illegal immigrant, but I have papers so I feel safe in traveling to Arizona.

      1. had very strict policies about who could become a citizen .  .  .   er, tribal member.

So much for the Rule of Law on this continent.

      2. He did not have papers so I assume that he came illegally.

And, he was a “wetback” as I sure he went above decks at some time during voyage.

Maybe, not a wetback. Maybe, a “wet all over”.

And, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants won’t invite me to their parties.

  4. I know most are stuck on the Anglo-Saxon part, but this part gets me. It’s so stupid I have to assume this unnamed advisor was talking out of his ass.

  5. to VP Biden’s condemnation of the statement.  They claim that his source is “foreign” and “false”, and they demand VP Biden take back his criticism.

Interestingly, the Romney campaign refuses to say if they’ll ask the Telegraph to correct its statement.

  6. The anonymous adviser should have checked more of the President’s genealogy. He shares ancestry with former presidents George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Woodrow Wilson, Zachary Taylor, John Tyler, and Jimmy Carter. Obama shares a common descent from King Edward I of England, King Henry III of England, King John Lackland of England, King Henry II of England, King Henry I of England, and King William I of England (William the Conqueror). While not Anglo-saxon, these are clearly deep English roots.
