  1. What if we called those citizens who came to this country not of their own free will undocumented students or undocumented citizens?  Would that change the knee jerk bigotry?  Probably not for the Tom T’s of the world but I’m willing to try.

Henceforth, ‘illegal immigrant’ is not in my vocabulary.  There is a whole generation or two that can be influenced and I don’t want the fear mongering bigots to win this war.

    1. .

R U going to punish that word ?

send it to detention, abolish it or just change it’s meaning ?

And in what sense was their coming here “not of their own free will ?”

Let’s have some fuzzy pontification to support this ill-thought-out moralizing, please.

      .

from a 3rd Gen (illegal) immigrant.

    2. because creating a path toward citizenship wouldn’t make any sense unless we at least acknowledge that they’re not citizens. There’s a middle ground between “illegals” and something they’re clearly not.

      1. The law would have to change to grant a pathway to citizenship, but the republicans have managed to block any such legislation.  Bush, McCain, Kennedy, and others, including Senator Obama, had just such bipartisan legislation pending, but the right wing mounted an effective campaign against the legislation.

WRRadio called for its supports to “close down” the Capital switchboard with their calls and thus block the vote.  They did so.  It was the first such exercise of RWRadio power.  Tragically, it was not the last.

    3. If citizenship means anything then there are clear limits on who is and is not a citizen. And that means they are illegal. With that said, you have a fair point that it was a decision made by their parents.

I am glad to see Obama take this step. Kids who have grown up here and are going on to College or the Military – we want them.

      1. apparently there used to exist a heavy social stigma against those men who cared for, fed, and housed children that they did not personally sire?  .  . . The genesis of Republicanism, perhaps?

      2. What an uncharacteristically mean spirited thing for you to say. Obama can’t even say something nice about fathers who stick around  for their children? And how about loving stepfathers? Mine was a better father to me than my own ever was; a wonderful, kind, sweet, funny, brilliant, reliable, loyal, honest, generous, loving father to me and husband to my mother.

Happy Fathers Day anyway, if it applies, Barron.

      3. Bitter old man, I hope someone remembers you tomorrow.

Let me join Blue Cat in a rare show of solidarity in saluting all those men who father….their own kids, kids that they were lucky to acquire by marriage, kids who had no place else to go, kids who were difficult to love, kids who disappointed, kids who hung the moon, kids who never call now, ….but all of whom needed fathers…and got them from those men we honor tomorrow….

          1. .

Hope to have some new leaders early next year.  I think you’ll be impressed.

            .

            Hey,

            the party is so small,

you and about 25 friends could take over and have your own darn major party.

            Think about it.

            .

      4. I think your humor has been sadly misinterpreted here — a comment so “uncharacteristic” is most likely, in my view, something attempted gone awry.  (Even though you do seem to have been writing a few things of recent late that appear more strident and condemning than I ever remember.)

I’m sorry you’re getting pummeled.  And, if I’m wrong, then I’m sorry for whatever it is that might be causing you to be feeling that way.  I do hope everything is well with you, and wish you a happy Father’s Day tomorrow (and every day).

  2. We have to patiently sit through grating nonsense from the Sarah Palins of the world, as if they had something groundbreaking to say, (no questions please) and yet we can interrupt the President halfway through a major policy speech at the White House.  WTF has this country come to.

    1. The concept of measured discourse does not exist for a lot of the media. And since on their TV/radio/print it’s you must listen to me and I shout you down – then what occurred is the new normal to them.

And before we get all high & mighty, it occurs here on Pols a lot too. (and yes, I’m guilty of it at times.)

    2. When Neil Munro interrupted President Obama during his speech, it once again showed how degenerate has become our political discourse and sense of civility. Whether or not one likes Barack Obama, one must respect the office of President of the United States. When one party attacks the very legitimacy of a sitting president, how does this help any of us?

Obama’s announcement? Good political move, and good policy move. He’s secured the borders and now is ready to move on to the people who are here now. All without any help from the once GOP.

    1. You gotta just be trolling or going for theater of the absurd.

But ok, I’ll play along: everyone named “Nock” I’ve met is a borderline-illiterate pedophile.

Hey, making up shit ’bout your opponents is fun!

  3. will be the opposite of Obama’s.  Maybe he just has no clue what Obama’s policy is. You know, like when he responded to a question about the war in Afghanistan by saying he hadn’t studied up on it yet.  Unless he really  means that he would end US policy under all post WWII US Presidents including Obama, of being a staunch ally of Israel, sometimes much too accomodating in light of Israel’s often self destructive, self defeating policies.

So if whatever Obama is doing, I’ll do the opposite is his Middle East policy, when it comes time to debate will we be hearing a lot of “I’m rubber, you’re glue.  Everything you say to me sticks right back to you”?

This guy is starting to make GW look well informed and in touch. Pretty sure GW wouldn’t have a problem finding the correct word for a donut, for instance. He also managed to come up with some details about what he would do besides just saying… check what the other guy says and, whatever it is (don’t ask me, how would I know?), that’s what I won’t be doing.

I’d say Romney is a joke as a serious presidential candidate but then we re-elected Reagan when he was clearly already suffering early stage dementia so…

    1. Romney won’t say he’ll overturn immigration order

Mitt Romney is refusing to say that he would overturn President Barack Obama’s new policy allowing some young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

The Republican presidential candidate was asked three times in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” whether he would overturn the executive order issued Friday if he’s elected in the fall. He refused to directly answer.

“It would be overtaken by events,” Romney said when pressed for the second time by moderator Bob Schieffer during the interview taped Saturday while the former Massachusetts governor’s bus tour stopped in Pennsylvania.

Romney’s comments represent a further softening of his rhetoric on immigration since the GOP primary campaign ended.

For example, before the Iowa caucuses in January, when he faced the challenge of winning over the right-wing base of the GOP, he pledged to veto legislation backed by Democrats that would have created a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Instead of emphasizing the plight of illegal immigrants, Romney focused on the consequences illegal immigration has for U.

      S. jobs.

I’m sure when RomneyBot 2 gets out on the campaign trail, he;ll be told what he believes and what his policy is.

  4. to all Dads and all kids lucky enough to still have their dads, even all the righties, including Barron.

I’m smoking pork ribs, Korean cut beef short ribs and chicken as we speak .. er .. type.  Better half is drinking a fancy ale the kid brought him.  Drinking to the fathers/grandfathers and brother/uncle we’ve lost. The cats have abandoned the deck for indoor lounging to escape the heat with instructions to wake them when the meat comes off the smoker.  Hope all your Fathers Days are going as well.
