Top 10 Reasons Hick Is Still A Dem:

  • by: Ignatius O'Reilly

Hick’s calculated silence about Prop 103, combined with legislative issues from last year, made me wonder: Why is he a registered Dem and not a Republican?

The start of my list:

10. Cool with state-funded Douglas County voucher program.

9. Cool with more cuts to state public schools. (Silence on 103)

8. Cool with telling Senate Dems to support cuts to children health care, then letting them twist in the wind with shame after he vetoes bill.

7. Cool with letting the gas-and-oil boys have at it up on the Roan and Piceance.

6. Cool with letting Cotter keep its leaky uranium pond in Canon City.

5. Cool with no sick pay for workers.

4. Cool with tax cut shenanigans for $100K/job subsidy for Gaylord hotel development.

3. Cool with cuts that put Colorado near the bottom of nation in higher ed funding.

I’m sure there are other reasons I’m missing…

  1. I’m shocked he hasn’t tried to communicate better with those who identify with Occupy Denver. He could have a televised press conference saying, “I hear you, Colorado. I’ve seen you come out by the thousands every Saturday. I get it”. He also did not have to waste huge amounts of money on police presence at these rallies. The Saturday marches were peaceful, and the rallies that sprung up in the hours after them only became violent when the massive military-like law enforcement presence made everyone afraid.

I don’t get the Governor at all. Not at all. Where is he and what is he doing?

    1. To be perfectly fair, I don’t think demonizing him (anyone) is the answer either. I don’t know that he is “cool” with any of those things. I do think he needs a better PR team, because if he feels one way or another about any of these issues, it’s not getting communicated to the people very well, IMHO. Is he deliberately avoiding going on record for any of these things? It’s hard to tell.

  2. He does those things to other people.

He’s not just a coward who stands on the sidelines while the poor get fucked. He’s now the fucker.

Announcing more cuts to education the day he helped kill Proposition 103 was a dick move. He’s a horrible person.

And as Nancy said, you forgot that he ordered the destruction of the Occupy Denver tents.

  3. Replacing Alex Martinez. Yeesh.

A couple of things with your list. Although I generally agree that Hickenlooper is more conservative than Bill Owens in many respects, there are some things that need to be put into perspective.

I would have liked to have seen Hickenlooper support Prop 103, but I can’t fault him too much for sticking with his campaign promise not to raise taxes in his first year. The fact that he wasn’t behind it certainly doomed it to defeat from the start as I noted when it first came up.

I-300, though, was very polarizing among Democrats in Denver. I don’t think supporting it or opposing it should be considered a Democratic Party litmus test, but I do see how you could come to the conclusion that it should be. I just disagree.

Other than that, he’s been shockingly bad. I’m sure I’ll catch flack from the Hick faithful, but a guy with the polling numbers he has should be willing to take more stands on the issues that matter. Check out Michael Bennet–a politician who is by no means perfect either, but who has done a good job representing Colorado and the Democratic Party–for a counterexample to Hick.

  4. * Using state troopers to dismantle Occupy Denver.

    * Replacing a Latino Dem on the state Supreme Court with a white Republican.

Still waiting for a good reason why he’s sticking with the Democratic Party. Main one I can think of is abortion.

  5. I think it’s that he has his eye on being the V.P. on the Democratic ticket in ’16. Remember that Bill Owens became a good governor once he decided he was not going to try and get the V.P. nomination on the Repub side.
