What you can do to fight for progress this week (May 3)

Two years ago, Gov. Jared Polis signed into law a comprehensive roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—a crucial step in making sure Colorado does our part with the rest of the world to meet the ambitious goals of the Paris climate agreement.

This year, Colorado’s progressive lawmakers have introduced legislation to make these goals reality. By empowering Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission to manage the process of migration to a clean energy future, Colorado is taking the next necessary step.

Today, the Denver Post editorial board came out strongly in support of Senate Bill 21-200, urging Gov. Polis to sign the bill once it reaches his desk:

The goals have already been established by Polis’ roadmap and by legislation in 2019, and the bill has been amended to align perfectly with those already established benchmarks. Greenhouse gas emissions will be cut by 26% below a baseline 2005 level by 2025; 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2050. Note that these goals are actually less ambitious than the ones former Gov. John Hickenlooper tossed out in an executive order signed at Red Rocks in 2017, so it’s not as though this is a radical new bar. [1]

Gov. Polis was elected on a platform of getting serious about confronting climate change, and Senate Bill 200 is the tool to turn this campaign promise into a promise kept. Action item #1 this week: Call Gov. Jared Polis’ office at (303) 866-2471 and let him know you SUPPORT Senate Bill 21-200.

And if you haven’t already, contact your state lawmakers today and urge them to support the climate justice bills including Senate Bill 200 currently making their way through the process.

The Curatorial Services & Collections Access team is hosting a well known Colorado woman, Dottie Lamm under their In Sights and In Person Connections Series! Join Curator of Archives Shaun Boyd and Dottie Lamm, former Colorado First Lady, columnist, psychiatric social worker, US Senate candidate, popular speaker, breast cancer survivor, mother, and author. She’s also been a flight attendant, Visiting Fellow at the University of Denver, delegate to two United Nations Conferences, and 1985 inductee into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame. Dottie and her husband, former Colorado Governor, have given their papers and artifacts to History Colorado, and a table display of select items will be featured at the event.
