Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell congratulated Democrat Joe Biden for winning the Presidential election today, exactly six weeks after Election Day. As The Washington Post reports:

“The electoral college has spoken, so today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden,” said McConnell (R-Ky.). He also nodded to the historic elevation of his Senate colleague, Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), to the vice presidency.

McConnell’s statement comes after some of his Senate colleagues strained to avoid saying the same thing Monday. The No. 3 Senate Republican, John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), called questions about the matter “gotcha” questions.

Chris Cillizza follows up for CNN on Barrasso’s ridiculous comment:

After the Electoral College — as expected — confirmed Monday that Joe Biden will be the 46th president of the United States, a reporter asked Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso whether or not Biden was now officially the “President-elect.” Barrasso called it a “gotcha” question.

Yes, you read that right.

How was asking whether Biden is President-elect a “gotcha” question, you ask? “I know what the Constitution says, Article 2, Section 1. And I know that the Electoral College has voted today, so to me, that tells us a lot … I follow the Constitution,” Barrasso, the third ranking member of Republican Senate leadership, explained. “Three weeks ago the transition occurred in terms of … access to the briefings and access to the money.”

It’s possible that Barrasso was following the example set by Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Yuma), who used this same lame excuse for an answer back in November:

Look, Cory, Moscow Mitch managed to navigate those treacherous waters known as the "Gotcha Question." I'll bet if you gave it some really thought, you too could answer it without inflicting a lot of self-harm.

Unless, of course, you are still in the running for head bellhop at Mar-A-Lago.

BTW, Mitch did more than simply congratulate Biden and Harris. He publicly discouraged any senate colleagues from challenging the results next month.

When McConnell wants something, he generally gets it (think Merrick Garland, Amy Coney Barrett). I wonder if he will crack the whip on his flock to keep them in line.

Then again at least two of them are not known for being team players and thrive on being seen as the proverbial turd in the punch bowl (I'm looking at you, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul).

  @R & R: Ted Cruz will likely fall into line. As for Mitch's fellow Kentuckian, Rand marches to the beat of his own drummer.
  
  Sometimes, that drum is way off key. Other times, it's spot on, as when Rand fights his lonely battle to make the Pentagon follow the law and conduct audits.

  Thanks, that's lovely. I particularly like this quote from one of the written witness statements: "I know that wasn’t a thumb because thumbs aren’t 6 inches long."
  
  I'm not sure the law enforcement statements fully address the fact that Lauren Boebert (not yet Boebert) was present at the bowling alley when the indecent exposure occurred, and was asked to leave the bowling alley and to not return to the business again.

    Miss Lauren also testified that her future hubby did nothing wrong- contradicting the two women he exposed himself to, plus an employee and the owner of the bowling alley. Her “alternate reality” mindset started early.
