"Tea Party" Claims Another Scalp

That’s the word from Senate District 16, as the Denver Post’s Lynn Bartels writes for The Spot:

Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert, who is running for the state Senate, fell short of making the primary ballot today and said he’s not sure whether he plans to petition on.

Hurlbert got 29 percent of the delegate vote while challenger Tim Leonard captured 71 percent. Candidates need 30 percent to make the ballot outright.

“I’m sorry Mark,” Sen. Al White, R-Hayden, who nominated Hurlbert, said afterward…

Leonard has the backing of the legislature’s most conservative members, former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo and the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, which claims Hurlbert is anti-Second Amendment. Hurlbert’s supporters include Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry of Grand Junction His supporters maintain Democrats can’t beat him in November.

Be that as it may, more people–like Sen. Al White–will tell you that Mark Hurlbert was much more qualified to make that claim. But there’s no denying the significance of this upset by Leonard and his “Tea Party” backers in the short run, is there?

  1. Leonard has been in the race a few months longer, and it’s certainly possible that Hurlbert carries some “baggage” from the Bryant case, but I believe Hurlbert is a fairly popular DA in the 5th JD (two of the four counties in that judicial district are in the six-county Senate District.

But based on little more than a guess, I believe this has more to do with the right wing of the right-wing party continuing to select candidates that suit them, not the average General Election voter.

      1. Pretty far right, I believe.  I still haven’t heard for sure, but I believe that DA Hurlbert (who didn’t make the 30 percent threshold) might try to petition on, even though there’s very little time left to do that.

        1. He’d need 1,000 valid signatures from district Republicans. That’s not an easy number to get in four days, but it’s not impossible.

    1. It’s the same as for Democrats, 10-30% means you can petition on, under 10% means you’re barred from getting on the ballot. But there isn’t much time to petition for anyone who hasn’t already had a drive under way.

      1. She understands mountain issues from the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic to transportation and was instrumental in getting a comprehensive fire management plan setup in Gilpin County.  She is not an ideologue but works for everyone in the county and Gilpin County has done well during her two terms as commissioner.

It should be a great race.  Crazy extremist versus pragmatic experience in good government.

It is hard to believe that Republicans continue to shed electable candidates based on purity tests like who loves their guns more.

  2. Mark Hurlbert is a great guy.  He really knows the Mountain communities and has been a very effective DA up here.  It would have been great to see him in the Senate.

Probably assures that the D’s keep this seat though.

    1. someone who loves his guns more as a qualification for making critical decisions regarding responsible government.  I don’t understand Republican logic for this being the highest priority for elective office but I don’t understand half of your posts either.

I prefer the solid experience of Commissioner Nicholson who was responsible for a Road & Bridge building that included a state of the art biomass heating system that uses beetle killed wood and is cited as a model for use of renewable fuels in public buildings.  I have a hunch that her chances improved significantly over the gun loving Republicans.
