Jessica Fender of the Denver Post reports from the House floor:
Low-income families would be helped by a bill to give them a tax break once the state is back in the black, proponents of legislation before the House this morning said.
But one representative had another solution for lifting families out of poverty.
“Don’t have kids out of wedlock,” said Rep. Spencer Swalm, R-Centennial. “If you’re married, if at all possible, try to stay married. Those are ways to lift families out of poverty.”
“Those children are almost guaranteed to be in poverty. You don’t want kids in poverty? Don’t have kids out of wedlock,” Swalm said. “Better yet, get a high school degree. That doesn’t cost a dime.”
He clarified that he’s not advocating women stay in abusive relationships…
Damn, why didn’t we think of that? What are we wasting time on a tax break for low-income families for? Like Rep. Larry Liston says, they’re just “sluts” anyway.
