BREAKING: Darryl Glenn Dominates at Republican State Convention

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and his strong ground game ended up capturing 34 of 37 delegates at the Republican State Convention in Colorado Springs on Saturday, but that wasn’t the biggest news of the day…

El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn captured the top only ballot spot in the race for U.S. Senate after delivering one hell of a speech to the delegates at World Arena. We suggested on Friday that Glenn seemed to have a good chance at making the ballot through the convention, but we never would have guessed that he could have performed so well as to keep state Sen. Tim Neville off the ballot completely.

Here are the voting results, which may change slightly before they become official:

Darryl Glenn: 2,664
Tim Neville: 696
Peg Littleton: 218
Jerry Natividad: 183

This obviously portends a significant change in the U.S. Senate race. If Glenn can turn his huge convention victory into a solid few weeks of fundraising success, he may be the new frontrunner in the battle for the GOP Senate nomination in June. As the longest-running candidate on the Republican side, things may finally have shifted in his favor.

Glenn is more well-known among Republican voters than the like of Jack Graham or Jon Keyser, and his own military background will make it difficult for Keyser to try to use his one-trick pony of a message (Glenn spent 21 years in the military, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force). And as we’ve seen from various GOP county assembly results this week, this is not a good year to be the “establishment” candidate, as Keyser has clearly become with the backing of the NRSC (nevermind this ridiculously-transparent attempt from the Colorado Springs Gazette to claim that Neville was the establishment guy).

As we have noted on numerous occasions here, Glenn has consistently been the best performer at the various Republican Senate debates. Glenn is the best speaker of the bunch in the Republican field, and apparently he has the strongest grassroots support. If he can raise money from a post-Convention bounce, Glenn will be the candidate to beat in June.
