Congressional Candidate Who Makes Excuses For Killing Jews Calls Local Blog "Racist, Dangerous"

Ad from Rep. Diana DeGette promoting a Colorado Pols blog post.

At the end of last month, Colorado congressional candidate Melat Kiros appeared for an interview with lefty shock-jock podcaster Hasan Piker of “America deserved 9/11” infamy, in which the underdog Democratic Socialist challenger to longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette of Denver asserted that the terrorist attack by Hamas that killed over 1,000 Israeli civilians on October 7th, 2023, the event that precipiated the subsequent two-year war on Gaza by Israel, was the “inevitable consequence” of Israel’s own actions.

In response to this, we offered the following commentary:

Americans have the freedom to take sides in this conflict, and the long history of conflict in the region, in safety on the other side of the world. But if you believe that violence against civilians is always wrong, which is a value that Americans generally hold, you can’t make excuses for Hamas’ killing of Israeli civilians on October 7th.

That’s exactly what Kiros just did. Justifying the murder of hundreds of Israeli civilians, and the capture of hundreds more to be used as bargaining chips, goes distantly beyond being critical of Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza. You can criticize Israel’s killing of civilians in Gaza without endorsing Hamas’ killing of civilians in Israel. That is in fact the only responsible position, and the only position compatible with the values that American Democrats claim to espouse.

Subsequently, this blog post appears to have been promoted by Rep. DeGette’s campaign, which we did not nor were we required to approve. Pointing out that the only morally responsible position in this or for that matter any conflict is to condemn all killing of civilians does not seem like a controversial position to us. It’s very easy for Americans to make sweeping statements from safety a world away, but once you start down the path of excusing the killing of some civilians and not others, your moral credibility disintegrates.

Despite this, as Axios’ Esteban Hernandez reports in a profile of the acrimonious CO-01 Democratic primary today, Kiros has taken a break from vilifying one of Colorado’s most consistently progressive elected leaders to declare a local political blog “horrifically racist and dangerous.”

Driving the news: Last week, a super PAC called Mile High Accountability Project released an ad claiming President Trump “loves” Democrats like Kiros who “attack” the party.

Kiros called the ad “lazy” and rejected its claims in an interview with Axios.

She also criticized DeGette’s campaign for promoting a blog post that suggested Kiros had rationalized the murder of Jews, calling the characterization “horrifically racist and dangerous.” [Pols emphasis]

Although this could easily degenerate into an exchange of epithets, our response to these accusations is first to give Kiros the opportunity to elaborate on how refusing to justify the deaths of Israeli civilians on October 7th is “racist and dangerous” in the comment section that follows every post. We will say that this response makes very little objective sense to us, and strikes us as a rash use of these words without a clear relationship to the subject at hand. We are in any event unable to determine how it could possibly be “racist” to condemn the murder of Jewish people, or how it is “dangerous” to call out rationalizing the murder of Jewish people.

In light of this, we stand by our previous assessment.
