Congress Finally Votes To End Trump's Stupid War

NBC News reports, after months of stalling from House leadership who abruptly cancelled a vote last month that was on the verge of succeeding, a symbolic war powers resolution asking President Donald Trump nicely to please maybe consider ending his over three-month-old war in Iran passed this afternoon with four Republicans joining every Democrat:

The Iran war powers resolution, offered by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, had been heading for a vote before the House left for its Memorial Day recess May 21. But it was abruptly pulled from the floor when it appeared too many Republicans were absent to defeat it.

On Wednesday, it passed 215-208, with four Republicans joining all Democrats in voting yes: Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan and Warren Davidson of Ohio.

The resolution directs Trump to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities with Iran, unless Congress votes to declare war or authorizes using military force against it. It would not force him to end the conflict, however; it is a symbolic expression of disapproval of the war with Iran.

There has been no eruption yet on President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account yet; we assume it’s coming late tonight when the president should be sleeping. That response is likely to consist of fury at the four Republican defectors rather than any acknowledgement of the huge political drag of the war on every Republican up for election in November. Today’s vote, symbolic as it is, is another loss of face for Trump, and losing face is as bad for Trump’s ego as…well, actually losing.

As for the actual war on Iran, there is as usual no good news. It’s increasingly evident that Trump has been stringing global markets along with falsehoods about progress in negotiations that events on the ground belie. The breaking point could come once markets make it clear they don’t believe him anymore–or at least no longer care to ride Trump’s daily rhetorical roller coaster to personal profit.

Call this a tiny but important step in the right direction.
