"Americans' Financial Situation - I Don't Think About Anybody"

President Trump stopped to talk with reporters on Tuesday on his way to China and made it crystal clear that he doesn’t give two shits about the economic damage he is causing Americans.

Trump: “Americans’ financial situation — I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.”

If you voted for a second Trump term because you thought The Big Orange Guy actually cared about his promises to make life more affordable, the joke is on you. Not only has Trump done the exact opposite — he openly admits that he doesn’t care at all about the impact of everything from his whipsaw tariffs to his half-assed Iran War.

Consumer prices have risen at the fastest rate in more than 3 years, with inflation reaching 3.8% in April. Finding a new job is more difficult than it has been in years. And as The New York Times reports today, there’s similar bad news from another report on carefully-watched pricing data:

Wholesale prices in April rose at their fastest rate in four years, the latest sign that the war with Iran is taking a toll on the U.S. economy.

The Producer Price Index, a measure of the costs that businesses pay for goods and services, rose 1.4 percent in April and was up 6 percent from a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday. It was the fastest one-month increase in the index since March 2022. [Pols emphasis]

The news came one day after the government reported that the better-known Consumer Price Index rose 3.8 percent in April from a year earlier, the fastest pace of inflation in nearly three years.

The producer index typically gets less attention than the consumer index, which measures the prices paid by everyday shoppers. But economists watch the measure closely, especially during periods of global disruption, because it gives an early look at how costs are filtering through the supply chain.

New polling on the economy this week from CNN shows that Americans are very concerned about being able to afford, well, everything. Trump’s approval rating on the economy is at a new low — a record he seems to break every week — with 70% of Americans saying they disapprove with how Trump is handling the economy.

After Trump’s comments on Tuesday, it’s no longer accurate to say that it seems like the President doesn’t care about the economic plight of Americans. Nobody has to wonder if Trump worries about his fellow Americans.

The President isn’t on the ballot in November, but his baffling policies — and his own words — will surely drag down vulnerable Republicans such as Reps. Jeff Crank (R-Colo. Springs) and Gabe Evans (R-Ft. Lupton). You can’t defend a President who won’t even pretend to defend his own people.
