How About Not Invading Greenland, Proposes Rep. Jason Crow

As Denver7’s Micah Smith reports, while the Trump administration plows through every international friction point like a bull in a proverbial china shop, Colorado’s Rep. Jason Crow has joined a bipartisan legislative effort to rein in Donald Trump’s grandiose designs on “acquiring” the territory of Greenland–in the process risking the permanent fracture of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and a new divide between the United States and our erstwhile European allies while real conflicts like the war in Ukraine rage on:

Colorado Congressman Jason Crow introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at stopping the U.S. from invading NATO member states like Greenland, as many Democratic and Republican leaders speak out against the Trump administration’s attempts to acquire the Danish territory.

A new CNN poll released this week found 75% of Americans are against the U.S. “attempting to take control of Greenland.”

…According to the Associated Press, a top Danish official said Wednesday that a “fundamental disagreement” over Greenland remains with President Donald Trump after holding highly anticipated White House talks with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

From Rep. Crow’s release Wednesday:

“America is at our strongest when we honor our alliances and stand by our allies,” said Congressman Crow. “NATO has been a cornerstone of keeping Americans safe, and undermining our alliances through reckless military adventurism puts Americans at risk. The American people don’t want more foreign intervention. They want lower costs and a smart foreign policy to keep us safe.”

Congressman Crow’s No Funds for NATO Invasion Act would:

Prohibit any federal funds from being made available for the invasion of a NATO member state or any territory protected by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Prohibit any officer or employee of the United States from taking any action to execute an invasion of a NATO member state or any territory protected by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

Trump’s threats to take over Greenland “the easy way or the hard way” have shaken the NATO alliance as much or even more than Trump’s erratic and sometimes counterproductive approach to the war in Ukraine, which continues despite Trump’s promises to end the conflict on the first day of his administration. Despite Trump’s stated pretext of defending Greenland from Russian and Chinese invasion, the biggest benefactors by far of a breakdown of the NATO alliance over a hostile takeover of Greenland would be…Russia and China! It’s another instance of Trump acting in what he says are America’s best interests, but appears in application to be exactly what our adversaries desire most.

And even though this bill’s prospects aren’t much better than the forecast for Greenland’s ice sheet in Speaker Mike Johnson’s servile U.S. House, it’s important for our allies to know that not all Americans have swapped their most basic sensibilities for MAGA hats. An overwhelming majority of Americans want absolutely nothing to do with Trump’s quixotic Greenland grab.

In fact, that may become our nation’s message to the world this year: “not all Americans.”
