Colorado Springs Politicians Now Cheering Trump's Retribution

We took note earlier this month of yet another bizarre decision by the Colorado Springs City Council to actively root against their own best interests — part of a pattern of the Republican-led council’s penchant for generally ignoring the wishes of their constituents.

On December 2, the City Council voted to ask Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser to drop a lawsuit against the Trump administration that is an attempt to prevent Space Command Headquarters from relocating to Alabama (and taking thousands of good-paying jobs along with it). Trump unilaterally announced in September that he was ordering the relocation of Space Command HQ to Huntsville, Alabama as punishment for Colorado refusing to support his election efforts in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Trump publicly said that he was making the decision to move Space Command HQ because he doesn’t like mail balloting in Colorado, which prompted this editorial from The Denver Post:

Trump isn’t the first president to make a politically motivated decision like this, but he is the first to gloat openly about using his power to punish a state for not supporting his re-election…

And this is par for the course. Since taking office, Trump has flouted long-held ethical standards meant to protect the American people from a president who is full of anger and wrath, and to prevent corruption of our great nation.

We hope this decision and his attack on Colorado will help sway voters in places like El Paso County when Trump tries to retain office in just a few short years.

Welp, now another elected body in Colorado Springs has entered the fight against Colorado Springs. Last week El Paso County Commissioners joined an amicus brief filed by the Colorado Springs Chamber and Economic Development Corporation that is more than just opposing Weiser’s lawsuit — the brief actually SUPPORTS the Trump administration’s legal arguments that it should be allowed to screw over another state out of spite. The rationale from El Paso County is beyond ridiculous:

We don’t like political lawsuits filed by one government against another…so here’s a political lawsuit filed by one government against another!

It was bad enough for the Colorado Springs City Council to ask AG Weiser to pull his lawsuit against the Trump administration. It’s another thing entirely for the El Paso County Commissioners to legally applaud President Trump for making a spiteful policy decision that will cause lasting harm to their own community.

And for what? If the goal here is to somehow convince Trump to stop intentionally harming Colorado, it’s not working.

In 2026, voters in El Paso County will have the opportunity to select County Commissioners who will actually prioritize, you know, El Paso County; Holly Williams is term-limited in 2026, while Lauren Nelson will be running for a full term after being appointed via vacancy committee in June 2025.
