Evans Blames His Incorrect Claim of Denver Airport ‘Blackouts’ on ‘Misinterpreted Information’

Last Wednesday, Colorado Congressman Gabe Evans made a shocking but false statement on a local conservative podcast:

“Denver International Airport right now is doing strategic blackouts when there’s high demand on the grid because there’s not enough power to keep Denver International Airport — to keep all the lights on all the time during peak demand time.”

His statement came hours after the shutdown had ended, but while Denver’s airport, the third-busiest in North America, was still operating under a federally imposed emergency flight reduction order due to insufficient air traffic control staffing levels.

On Thursday, the Colorado Times Recorder reached out to the Denver International Airport (DEN) press officials in an attempt to confirm Evans’ claim and inquire if true, whether the blackout were impacting safety or on-time travel, considering that the airport is entering its busiest time of the year.

The response was unequivocal: “DEN does not experience blackouts due to power capacity issues.”

However, sometime after CTR’s initial email to the airport media office, conservative podcaster Brandon Wark added a note to the Evans interview episode description on Youtube:

“Congressman Gabe Evans reached out to clarify a remark made at 16:05. His reference to Denver International Airport (DIA) carrying out “strategic blackouts” stemmed from misinterpreted information he received. Congressman Evans gave me the following statement, ‘While airports across the country are facing growing energy demands, Colorado’s grid remains increasingly unreliable. This underscores exactly why securing safe, affordable and reliable energy is vital to the future or our state and nation.’”

CTR asked Evans’ office for clarification of the term “misinterpreted information,” specifically what the information was and whether he or someone else was responsible for misinterpreting it, but has not yet heard back. This article will be updated with any response received.
