Boebert Starts The War On Christmas A Few Months Early

  •
  • by: Colorado Pols

Rep. Lauren Boebert and her Christmas Defense Force.

As the UK Indepedent’s Ariana Baio reports, debate yesterday in the U.S. House took a turn for the characteristically nutty, after Colorado’s carpetbagging crusader Rep. Lauren Boebert dropped one of her signature non sequitur bombs in floor debate over an amendment she offered to a forest management bill:

Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert slammed Democrats while on the House floor saying they hate Jolly St. Nick as she sparred with California Representative Katie Porter over the sales of Christmas trees on federal land.

“It’s so sad to hear my colleagues on the other side of the aisle hate Christmas,” Boebert dryly said Tuesday.

Her comment, which led to laughter from audience members in the chamber, was part of the debate over her proposed amendment to the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program – which seeks to reduce wildfire risk and restore landscapes through collaboration between the public and the government.

Boebert’s amendment, which passed the GOP-controlled House by a voice vote, would require the Forest Service to develop plans for Christmas trees sales, which they can already do if it’s appropriate. This drew an objection from Rep. Katie Porter of California, who argued sensibly that requiring Christmas tree sales would prioritize selling a product over managing forests properly:

“By placing a preference on projects that are related to Christmas tree harvest, this amendment would limit the landscape restoration program by prioritizing a marketable product over landscape restoration,” Porter explained. “And to be extra clear, the Forest Service already has broad authority to conduct the sale of firewood and of Christmas trees.”

That’s when Boebert responded that Democrats “hate Christmas,” lest Rep. Porter or anyone else get the mistaken impression this was a rational conversation. No matter which district she’s running to represent, rationality is not what Boebert brings to the table.

And she’s got no incentive to change now.
