As the Colorado Springs Independent’s Pam Zubeck reports, Republican freshman controversy magnet Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia’s much-balleyhooed appearance as the keynote speaker for the El Paso County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser has finally arrived–and reportedly it’s going to be a capacity crowd:
More than 400 people will crowd into the Hotel Elegante [tonight], Aug. 6, for the El Paso County GOP Lincoln dinner where Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene will speak.
GOP Chair Vickie Tonkins announced the “sold out” crowd in an Aug. 4 news release…
“If you were able to get in, before we sold out, good for you!” Tonkins’ release said. “This is going to be an awesome event and you are in for a great time. How I wish we could have gotten everyone in that wanted to be there. The venue just could not give us anymore tables…I tried.”
She then urges people to “bring your checkbook, cash, or credit card,” because the event is a fundraiser for the party.
She also notes that Greene is “exited [sic]” to attend…
After MTG was announced as the keynote speaker by the El Paso County GOP’s tendentious chairwoman Vickie Tonkins, who has maintained control over the county party with the assistance of the downright creepy FEC United/United American Defense Force quasi-militia group, a substantial number of “respectable” Republicans including Colorado GOP chairwoman Kristi Burton Brown and the area’s congressional representative Doug Lamborn suddenly realized their schedules were conflicted and they couldn’t attend.
A few local Republicans actually worked up the nerve to criticize the choice of MTG to keynote the party’s fundraiser, but a sellout crowd at the three-star Hotel Elegante assuming it materializes this evening is probably all the response Tonkins–and Greene–need for them. Greene may have been stripped of her committee assignments and condemned even by many Republican leaders for her regular embarrassments, but there’s no question MTG retains a large, forgiving, and loyal following among the GOP grassroots.
And tonight, MTG and one of our state’s most radicalized county Republican Party organizations will validate each other.
