Coffman Makes it Official; Harvey Next

Republican Secretary of State Mike Coffman made it official yesterday: He's running for congress in CD-6. As the Rocky Mountain News reports:

Secretary of State Mike Coffman on Tuesday formally filed to run for Congress, angering some Republicans who fear a Democrat will take over his state job but thrilling others who want an Iraq war veteran in Washington.

Coffman notified the Federal Election Commission that he will run in the 6th Congressional District, said Sean Tonner, his campaign spokesman.

Although some of the state's top Republicans have tried to talk Coffman out of running, Tonner said many rank-and-file party members and veterans are thrilled with the idea.

"He's been absolutely inundated the last four days," Tonner said.

Coffman, of Aurora, is expected to be one of at least four candidates seeking the GOP nomination in next year's primary. State Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch, will announce today.

Coffman enters the field as the likely favorite given his strong name ID from three statewide victories. But the Republican primary will likely be a race to the right, and look for Harvey to try to position himself as the most Republican of the Republicans in the race.

As long as Bill Armstrong doesn't support him, I"m for Coffman
Armstrong will support his son, Will, if he runs. Otherwise, he's likely to support Coffman, having supported him in the past.

If Harvey gets the nomination, I'm voting Dem.

Armstrong put the GOP in it's hole
As a Repulsive Republican Radical, Armstrong has destroyed the GOP in Colorado. I won't support any candidate he backs.

Same goes for Dobson
By the way. (btw)

Holy Cow!
Is there something in my coffee or are you making perfect sense this morning?

Careful there. Pretty soon, you will be ID as a republican, and not a neo-con. And the neo-cons will call you a RINO.

I prefer the "u" in honour as it seems to be missing these days.

I think you are wrong.
I don't think Coffman is a favorite.  He's not the darling of the right wing and in fact in the past has been passed over by the right wing.  As for Armstrong, remember, the last time he ran for election was 1984.  That means that no one under 42 will have ever voted for him.  Also remember that Douglas County's growth has all occurred since then.  In the 80's Douglas County consisted of Castle Rock and the hamlet of Parker.  Everyone else is new and that's about 1/3 of the district.  The old-timers in South Arapahoe are gone, trust me I know, I was a kid when he ran and now, I'm one of the few old-timers left.  The rest are dead, RINO's who would never vote for any of these Republicans and many of us have left the Republican Party.  Besides, most of the old-timers for Armstrong are in Aurora, and that isn't in the 6th district.  I'd say the favorites are the two Senators from Douglas County.

Just a rumor at this point...
But I hear Wiens is dropping out. No idea why, just heard it.

Who's the best money raiser? Who will sell out first?
The money primary is well under way.

Coffman starts with name recognition and an outstanding record of public service in Colorado and the military, unmatched by Armstrong or Harvey as far as I know.

Big money will back the most likely winner of the primary, which strikes me as being Coffman. He has lots of experience in fund raising, and he's a known public figure. He won't make a fool of himself, his district, his party or his state.

He was a creative and energetic legislator before he ran for state treasurer, and he would make be a strong Congressional voice for the state as well as for the district.

I've seen some negative references to Harvey from Dems here, but I don't know him. Armstrong's father rules him out for me.

My take!....
Repubs always sell out first.....and game the system better.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble and reclaim the commons. Stop the militarization of America.

Harvey just announced
And Weins is dropping out

Sigh.
As a Democrat in CD-6, must I always be represented by some right-of-Attila-the-Hun version of a Republican? (Check out Ted Harvey's brand new website at http://www.tedharvey... )

Why can't the Republicans nominate some even slightly centrist candidate who conservative Democrats can rally around?

Harvey is apparently (a) a gun nut, (b) against abortion even if the woman's life is at stake, (c) against gay civil unions in any way, shape or form, (d) against any proposal to provide even a modicum of catastrophic health coverage for those too poor to have insurance, (e) for continuing to have our troops killed by IED's indefinitely so that Iraq will be safe for Shiite fundamentalists, and (f) against any possible realistic solution to illegal immigration.

I love the way he's shamelessly riding on his father's coattails: "As the son of a Vietnam era fighter pilot..." (You can taste the desperate effort to try to somehow neutralize Mike Coffman's military credentials.)

Then he segues rather gracelessly into how he himself was a bureaucrat of some sort, fighting for our freedoms. Oh, and with experience in the mortgage industry. Now THAT'S comforting in this day and age.

Sorry, I'm sure he's a nice guy and I'm overly trashing him. But I'm just so sick of having ultra-rightists representing this increasingly diverse district.

"Why not do the right thing for the American people, even though it's not exactly what we want." - Speaker Boehner

Slick site but his record pales next to Coffman's
Coffman holds most of the same positions as Harvey, I'd guess.

But he's politically savvy enough not to make a big deal of the social issues. People know where he stands on those issues. And, if asked, I assume he'll talk about them.

Like Reagan, he focuses on the business of governing, economics, national security and the needs of his constituents.

People who focus on the social issues instead of on real issues turn off independents and Republicans who don't agree with them on the social issues.

Advantage Coffman.

Ted Harvey......another chicken hawk neo-con for Congress?
Great, yet another GOP candidate who never served in the military wants to go to D.C. to help make national security decisions in the age of al Queda, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
I particularly like the way Ted Harvey has tried to latch on to his late father's military service in Vietnam.  The closest this guy came to seeing military action was his tour of duty at the Independence Institute.
There are many things on which I disagree with Mike Coffman, but at least he's put his ass on the line in Kuwait and Iraq.  (I also think Coffman could turn out to be a Chuck Hagel-type conservative, which wouldn't be half bad.)
