Deep Thoughts With "Skip" Carlson

  • by: Colorado Pols

One of the more colorful figures running for the Colorado House this year Republican Art “Skip” Carlson of Weld County running in HD-50–not to be confused with “Big Art” Carlson, formerly a candidate for SD-28 who lost to John Lyons and previously discussed by our friend Jason Salzman.

“Skip” Carlson earns a mention today for this so-bad-it’s-good campaign video:

Reciting a poem of his own authorship called “Ordinary People,” Carlson sounds like, and we really think we’ve nailed this, a perfect cross between Deep Thoughts with Jack Handey and Hank Hill from King of The Hill. It’s so awesomely campy and hilarious that you’re upset when the godawful off-key backing band breaks into the refrain of “God Bless America,” drowning out Carlson’s poem in a glorious amateur mess. Some of the photos still have watermarks from the stock image company they were lifted from, a sure sign you’re dealing with a pro.

But if you manage to get to the end of Carlson’s poem, you’re greeted by the biggest surprise of all. This video was not produced by Carlson’s grandson who actually only knows how to make mix tapes–it was paid for! A Maryland company called Ross Communications of Annapolis, who advertises that they can tell your story every bit as well as they just told “Skip” Carlson’s.

In addition to not winning votes, we’re afraid this video won’t sell more videos.

  1. can’t say there’s anything to disagree with in that.  And I really enjoy his pictures of troops, including women.  He joins us as a feminist.

He recognizes the trauma of the Civil War and that is was a fight for a principle, not economics or some of the other rationales that come from the right.

He acknowledges the wide support of the govt after the trade towers bombing and I’m sure he feels at least some unease with the thinking that got us into Iraq.

Yep, sounds like a Democrat to me.

  2. to maintaining a majority in the House. HD-50 should by any account be a strong opportunity for a pickup for the Republicans. Although it has been well-represented by Dave Young since his vacancy appointment, it’s a district that leans Republican. In 2010, this clown may have even stood a chance despite his laughably bad candidacy (in addition to this video, he’s at negative $600 cash on hand as of the last SOS filing) but it ain’t 2010.

A great example of terrible candidate recruitment from McNulty and the GOP.

  3. 1.  Is this a trailer from “The Campaign?”  He’s going to kick Zack Galifianakis’s ass

    2.  Where does one buy flag shirts?  Does anyone else find them offensive? Maybe it’s just the boy scout in me

    3.  Policies? or is this the underpants gnome school of public policy? Stage 1. Flags 2. ? 3. America comes together to _____(fill in blank)

    1. find flag apparel offensive, but that’s at least in part because it seems to be favored by people who hold to principles which oppose the ones the flag stands for.

  4. Tell that to the many Indian tribes.

And not sure what the famous First Republican Depression photo of the dust storm has to do with “enabling” all the wWII planes and ships.

Couldn’t watch more than about a minute.
