Democrats To Chop Off Weiner?

  • by: Colorado Pols

Our friends at the Washington Post report:

The saga of Rep. Anthony Weiner took several turns Wednesday as a handful of Capitol Hill Democrats called for the lawmaker to resign and news broke that Weiner’s wife was pregnant…

On Capitol Hill, Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz (D-Pa.) issued a statement Wednesday calling on Weiner (D-N.Y.) to step down after his admission of engaging in virtual relationships with at least six women. Schwartz said that “having the respect of your constituents is fundamental for a Member of Congress,” adding that in “light of Anthony Weiner’s offensive behavior online, he should resign.”

Such a strong statement by Schwartz, who handles recruitment as well as member services for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, was widely regarded as a sign that the party leadership had decided it’s time for Weiner to leave the House…

Like we said a couple of days ago, the real problem here is not Rep. Anthony Weiner’s personal morality, or lack thereof. For every Rep. Chris Lee who resigns there is a Sen. David Vitter who gets re-elected without issue after a bout of moral turpitude, and perfectly legal sexual proclivities aren’t, please pardon us, honest yardsticks to measure a public official by.

After all, looking like an idiot is not a disqualifier to high office, folks.

All of which is entirely arguable until the moment you start lying. That’s the point where late-night joke fodder becomes something that really can, and probably should, become a serious problem–and in Rep. Weiner’s case, perhaps an unjustifiable distraction for his party.

      1. ….during one of my downrange “discussions” in the back of an M113, my squad members and I debated the more valuable activity once we returned to our barracks:

        1) Super Supper, Hot Shower and Sleep or

        2) Quick shower and a party downtown.

        #1 was the clear winner…

    1. Remember him, ya know the Repub Senator that broke the law. with prostitutes. I know, maybe Coburn should resign first, because of helping Ensign commit Fraud with the $96000 payoff to the mistress.

  1. I really don’t care to know all the particulars of anybody’s sex life other than my own.  Everybody lies about their sex life.  Especially in this case, no laws were apparently broken, no perjury was committed, nobody was hurt (except perhaps for his wife, and that’s his and her problem, not ours).

We as a country need to grow up and get our noses out of other peoples’ junk.  Seriously.  Makes us look like a bunch of dogs.

Weiner can make his own decision about what to do next in his life.  And we need to make our own decision about focusing on policy discussions, not on the Cult of Personality.

    1. And if everyone thinks it’s so different now that his wife is pregnant, they should probably stop with the little jokes. Way too many people are riding on both sides of this “issue.”

  2. Weiner was the official attack dog of the progressive wing of the House–which is why he’s being thrown under a bus by his progressive colleagues.  Now that he’s been compromised, he’s useless to them in the attack-dog role. Worse yet, he’s a liability. Intraparty politics is all about “what have you done for me lately?”

It’s also why people like Eric Cantor (stupidly) is calling for his resignation. It’s really none of his business, but in the attack-dog role, Weiner willingly painted a target on his own back.  Turn about is fair play, I guess.  Live by the sword, die by it.

The other issue is whether his constituents want him there.  That’s totally separate from the attack dog issue, in my opinion unrelated, and should be left up to the voters.  If the Dems in his district don’t like him, they’ll primary him.  If he wins the primary, the voters in general get to speak again.  If his constituents want him in Congress, then he’ll be back.  If they don’t, he they’ll throw his ass out.

Asking for an ethics investigation was the right thing to do.  That will give his constituents something to read before they choose.

Yes, it’s distracting.  But his continued presence in Congress should be left up to the people.  That’s the only solution that’s actually fair to the people.

  3. …we can debate that point for endless web pages, but my ultimate observation is “what the F**K where you thinking?”

Not over the obvious sleazy digital infidelity, but the fact he did so much stupid shit electronically.

What the hell else did he share with his “fans?” Any policy papers on bills that are classified? Did he brag about seeing the OBL photos?

This is beyond bad judgment – this is absolutely not understanding the ramifications of sharing information (including pictures of his junk) digitally with people outside of his office.

  4. I’m sorry, that was just too hard to resist. Surprisingly, I actually agree with Weiner about something. He shouldn’t resign. Stick it to the Dems man!
