Norton: "You'd Think Ken [Buck] Would Be Man Enough to Do it Himself"

by: Colorado Pols

Wed Jul 14, 2010 at 10:09:36 AM MDT

We'd say the gloves have officially come off in the Republican race for the U.S. Senate. Jane Norton has started running a commercial attacking Ken Buck over the special-interest ads that have been running against her. "You'd think Ken would be man enough to do it himself," she says.

Meanwhile, a YouTube video showing that Buck's campaign may have had prior knowledge of some of these third-party ads (which, of course, would be illegal if there was any sort of coordination involved) has popped up.

The YouTube video is very weak
I just don't see real strong evidence of wrongdoing here.

ColoradoPols please retract that lie.
Although your link is broken, I've seen the YouTube video and it shows no such thing. All it shows is that Walt Klein, Buck's CAMPAIGN MANAGER, made a comment about the ads coming out. This occurred after the ad buy was PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. So that statement of yours is defamatory.

As far as the first part, I'm sure Norton would just love to drag Buck into the mud with her. Somehow because a 527 group runs an ad for a candidate they like that makes them shady? And saying that Buck isn't "man enough" is just disingenuous. Everybody knows she has had much more money to spend on TV ads which she raised from the D.C. lobbyist circles she is part of.

"...energy shouldn't be in the market." - Aristotle

I don't think that word means what you think it means
The OP says talks about the Buck CAMPAIGN and says that it MAY HAVE had knowledge of the ads coming out.

For it to be defamation, they would have to state something concrete, ie "Ken Buck illegally coordinated with the 527's". But they say "may have" so it's not defamation.

Second of all, they never implied that Buck himself was involved, only his campaign, so the all-caps campaign manager correction doesn't make much sense.

Finally, we all know that Norton's gasping for air. She's been on this dirty road for weeks. CPols reporting her latest move is what they are here to do, so why would you want them to stop?

You have no right to worry about what people mistakenly believe.

man enough
Are you saying that Norton isn't man enough?
What is your point exactly?

[ Parent ]
Buck whining
Coloradopols is right!  Buck should man up and take ownership of the ad.  There have been about $2 mil in ads from three 527's run against Norton so far. In all of her ads Norton steps up and takes credit.  Buck has not taken credit for anything.  He is currently whining in his latest ad.  This is a case of the female in the race, Jane Norton, acting more manly by far than Buck.  She also took a bold stand supporting Tancredo.  Buck came out against Tancredo, until he realized the public was with Tancredo. Buck then walked it back part way.  That is like standing in the middle of the road. When a candidate tries to appease all sides, he gets support from no one. Norton is the one manning up, standing strong and tall.

Norton is the one manning up, standing strong and tall.
Really? Then why is it Buck is willing to be interviewed by everyone while Norton is shielded from interviews as much as possible?

[ Parent ]
Norton the one manning up
Norton is available to the people and the press. She has been at more open events in the last few weeks than Buck has all year. Buck is the one having to hide, because everywhere he goes, his malfeasance are following him.

[ Parent ]
Smart 1, no need to lie, everyone here knows about Norton and you are not believed or believable
Norton has not been available to the people or the press.  She has not been at more events than Buck in the last few weeks or the past year.  Norton has gone from being up by 30 point to down by 16 and as a paid staffer I am sure you  are proud that you can take part of the credit for that.

Coming on this site and lying on Norton's behalf does not help Norton.  It just reinforces that the choice of DC Lobbyist Charlie Black and the NRSC who backed Ref C has nothing to add to the political discourse except provide an example of how it can become an uncivil discourse.

Ok smart1 - prove it
I've ask Cinnamon & Josh multiple times for an interview with Norton. Make it happen.

Smart 1 - Here is another example of Norton being available to the press
This week the Daily Caller had a nice article on Buck.  They tried to contact Norton.  Here is what they wrote:

"I think Buck's success is as much a story about Jane Norton as it is about Buck," said Colorado State political science professor John Straayer. A SurveyUSA poll last month shows Buck with 53 percent, compared to Norton's 37 percent. Her campaign, which has been arguing that she's an ardent conservative too, could not be reached for comment for this story

That arrogant attitude towards the press does not help a candidate, particularly when they are behind like Norton and need some free publicity.

Here is what Buck had to say about his attitude towards the press:

The media, he suggested, can mischaracterize his stances from time to time by taking "two words out of a three paragraph analysis and start talking about issues in very simplified terms." But he's definitely not ignoring the press.

"I have returned every phone call I have gotten to this point, and I think the upside for a candidate - a challenger like myself - is I need free media, and I need to get my name out there and my ideas out there."

Buck and Norton have treated the press differently from the begining and that is one of the reasons he is up by 16% today.

Smart 1
It took very little investigation to see that you produced and posted that video to YouTube under your other alias.  Now you have the audacity to come on here and spread your nonsense.  What a pathetic individual you are.  Check out the real facts idiot. Walt Klein already has answered how he found out about the information.  From the media bonehead, asking for a comment from him on the buy.  You need to do as Jane Norton suggests. Man up, even though you are a...ahem...a woman.

Smart 1
seems like a woman with very big, nasty balls.

Code Pink stands for really, really radically ignorant babes.

[ Parent ]
Hello again, paid Norton staffer who shall remain nameless
Could you please explain to me why you are besmirching the name of these good 527's? You do realize that they are called 527's because they are LEGAL organizations under section 527 of something, right? BY LAW, Buck cannot communicate with them, so why would he take credit for their content? He didn't have anything to do with them; that would be ILLEGAL.

Oh, and then you pull out the gender card? Shameless. I'm sure the general electorate is thrilled to hear that Norton is such a strong supporter of Tancredo. Talk about shooting yourself (or your candidate) in the foot.

"...energy shouldn't be in the market." - Aristotle

[ Parent ]
Norton the one manning up
Yes, 527's are legal organizations, but they cannot associate with the candidate.  Morgensen told Buck he would give him $1mil for the Senate race. Three 527's have been funded by Morgensen.  FEC campaign finance violation charges have been filed against Buck, Morgensen, Cache Bank, and the three 527's. Buck and Morgensen have been at numerous events together. Buck should "man up" and admit who is paying for the ads.

[ Parent ]
If Norton was manning up why doesn't she say she is the person behind the FEC complaint
Norton's FEC filings indicate that she paid a law firm to draft the FEC complaint which she had one of her Owens Ref C era friends send in. Why doesn't Norton just admit the bogus charges were filed by her?
It takes a man to stand up to unfounded criticism and not hit back, when the effect of hitting back would be damage to the party.  Obviously, Penry is a girly boy, and smart 1 and Norton don't know very much about being a man.

[ Parent ]
Hey smart 1
back up your claims at least. Do you have a link to prove who funded the 527's?

"...energy shouldn't be in the market." - Aristotle

[ Parent ]
The public was with Tancredo really?
The other possibility was that Buck was thinking it was the general and wanted to act sane but then he realized that his primary voters are bat shit crazies who are 90% Birthers so he pivoted from nobody takes Tommy Terrified seriously anymore to Obama scares me more than having my right testicle gnawed off by a tea bagger.  It was really pathetic pandering.  I thought the guy was going to be someone fresh from the right who didn't have Nortons dirty laundry but alas he lapsed back into trying to please the most far right radical extremists of his party.  What a fool.

[ Parent ]
Knowledge or Coordination?
Is simple knowledge illegal or knowledge with a design on coordination?

The damning part of the YouTube clip is that Buck overstates that he doesn't know about them until AFTER they come out which is just silly talk as demonstrated by Klein's comments.

But if all he does is KNOW a supportive ad is coming because, at a certain point, it is public knowledge, I don't see the problem.

Now, if he knows an ad buy is in and has specific knowledge of the content that he can coordinate with his own weekly talking points, mailings, etc, THAT is a problem.

It seems that, unless simple knowledge is illegal, convicting someone of coordination with a 527 would be very challenging. Accusing, a little simpler. But by the time any substantial action is investigated, I would think that it would be moot. This is one of the reasons why the presence of 527s is so damaging to our electoral process.

Are you sure about that?
Is the Norton piece REALLY a buy? (She's got less cash on hand then Buck.)  I really don't see her spending what she has on TV advertising.  She should be hitting the mail...

Yes it's a fairly substantial buy

RG- how much did they spend?

Spend is hard to say because reservations can change
They reserved $250K.

She only had about 350K to spend as of June 30th, she must be laying off staff then.

A front page second section article slamming Maes who is now the likely GOP Gubernatorial nominee.

Norton slamming Buck and vice-versa.

And diaries slamming Repubs are otherwise so rare here...

An Effective Ad
Haven't you been wondering who paid for almost every Buck ad?  I have and I bet a lot of people have.  I like the Norton ad.  It's an inventive way to challenge Buck, call him a wimp and rasie in an interesting way an issue that people haven't really cared about before, but might now with the Supreme Court's ruling allowing unlimited corporate spending.  Howdo we know that Buck's ads aren't completely paid for by
BP?????

Has Buck even run any ads yet?
(I don't have a TV.) The one I posted is just a web ad.

"...energy shouldn't be in the market." - Aristotle

[ Parent ]
Has Buck even run any ads yet?
No. Not yet.

[ Parent ]
Morgensen runs the Buck Ads
Just think about it--if Jerry Morgensen donated $1 million to Buck's candidacy for 527 TV ads and mailers, then he would have spent more than every other donor COMBINED. That kind of relationship comes with many strings attached--I would say almost puppet-like.

Putting up some lame, one-dimensional state assembly-oriented web ad is easy to do when someone else does all your dirty work for you. Ken Buck should man up and level the attacks himself.

[ Parent ]
MHP - the relationship may be that they are friends
OMG - a Greeley attorney who used to work for the company which Morgensen runs is a friend of the boss.  Hold the presses.  This must be the Washington insider Norton was talking about.
Norton is just a hack with a sense of entitlement who thought her brother in law gave her a Senate seat and is disappointed that he was not able to pull it off.
It would be absolutely horrible if the next senator from Colorado was friends with the president of a Colorado construction company.  I would be so much better if he be biddies with DC Lobbyists or NY Investment bankers. :)

But no, Buck will not stoop to take the bait.

BP campaign money.......that would be Obama.

During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years,
