“Tea Party” GOP Leadership Slate–Hurts Harvey?

We’re reprinted a press release below from a newly-announced campaign by three Republicans, now running as a slate of candidates to replace outgoing Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams. Previously-announced candidate Bart Baron has teamed up with John Wagner, former manager for running joke Senate candidate Cleve Tidwell, and some guy we’ve never heard of named […]

GOP Arizona Copycat Immigration Bills Fizzle

As the Durango Herald’s Joe Hanel reports: Rep. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs, said his Colorado House Bill 1107 had too many problems to continue. “After many drafts and hours of deliberation and meetings with entities, we had come to some agreement with agencies out there,” Baumgardner said. “(But) we couldn’t seem to get away […]

At Least He’s Not Your Unfortunately Named Former Mayor

( – promoted by redstateblues) Fort Wayne probably won’t be dedicating a new government building named after Harry Baals, the Indiana city’s deputy mayor told The Journal Gazette today. And that’s despite the former mayor — who ran Fort Wayne longer than anyone else — leading an online poll run by the city, with more […]

“Show Us The Money” With Pay-As-You-Go?

House Democrats held a press conference this afternoon on a newly-introduced bill that will, depending on who you talk to, either attract a lot of bipartisan support–or, as seems to be the case, give the House Republican majority some rather telling indigestion. House Bill 1052, known as the “Paygo” bill, would require all bills that […]

Defense Denver and Andrea Merida

I have to say again that I don’t have any dog in the fight over the attempted recall of a Denver Public Schools board member now underway. I posted this weekend about the impression I was getting from this campaign based on their behavior in response to legitimate questions. http://coloradopols.com/diary/… Another thing I don’t like […]

Harvey vs. Call vs…

In the aftermath of Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams’ surprising–only due to belatedness, as we’ll explain–decision to give up his bid for re-election, all eyes are on two possible replacements: the announced bid of state Sen. Ted Harvey, and the widely-expected entry into the race by attorney and former Denver GOP chair Ryan Call. Both […]

A Fine Idea, But…

The AP reports on a bill introduced last Friday by two Republicans, Sen. Nancy Spence and Rep. Tom Massey–yell “stop” when it gets weird: Movie tickets would cost 10 cents more under a proposal by two Colorado Republicans to raise incentive money for film productions. House Bill 1207 would add a dime to movie tickets […]

The ugly truth behind Friday’s (Jan) jobs report

Following Friday’s release of the January jobs report there has been much ‘ado’ (not adieu) about the rapidly sinking unemployment rate.   The Denver Post (from a widely distributed AP report) wrote, “The unemployment rate is suddenly sinking at the fastest pace in half a century, falling to 9 percent from 9.8% in just two […]

A Change of Heart?

( – promoted by redstateblues) Is it a change of heart… or just a change of tactics? On Thursday, the Colorado Oil and Gas Association (COGA), in a joint press release with the Colorado Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR), announced they were withdrawing their lawsuit against the new oil and gas rules. For the people, […]

Defense Denver and the Romies

I’ve been paying more attention to this “Defense Denver” recall campaign against a member of the Denver Public Schools board mostly because of the angry and confrontational way they and their supporters have conducted themselves on this blog. I have no dog in this recall fight one way or the other, even though I am […]

Senate Race Rape Victim Blasts “Forcible Rape” Redefinition Attempt

MONDAY UPDATE: A reader sent us the text of a letter from Rep. Cory Gardner in response to questions about his co-sponsorship of this legislation, where he self-identifies as an “original co-sponsor.” This was already known, but some readers wanted to see the proof. Full text below. —– Last fall, the United States Senate race […]

CO Revenue Resolution Dies

Perhaps someone else can find something that I can’t. The annual non-binding resolution that declares and certifies the revenue estimates will not pass at all this year. House Republicans refuse to budge on their rejection of the estimates set by people who do so for a living in favor of their own random guess. Senate […]

Still a Bad Idea

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) News has hit that Senator Mark Udall is cosponsoring the resurrected constitutional balanced budget amendment. The paper which shall not be named has a gushing editorial about it. Needless to say, the base is rattled, and I think the Senator would do well to make the progressive case for […]

Mayor Vidal to run for mayor?

Even though the election of the next mayor is less than 90 days away and petitions are already being circulated, at least one more person could be making a jump into the race that would shake things up. Some in the business community including their lobbyists had quietly complained a lack of a business candidate […]

Lamborn to face public today

(A rare event indeed – promoted by redstateblues) If you live in CD-05, you may not know who your US Congressman is.  It’s Republican Doug Lamborn. You can be forgiven for not knowing. As a rule, he does not allow the public to see him or ask him questions.   Now in his third term, […]

Teeter on the Edge at the Great Maw of China

The staggering debt of the United States, much owed to China and other nations, is not news although it is in it again today with some of Colorado’s own lamebrains wanting to pay it off with funds already bequeathed to those that deposited them.   And while the GOP members of Colorado’s delegation fixate on […]

Reporters should ask Suthers: If your anti-gay legal brief isn’t anti-gay, what is it?

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) Colorado Attorney General John Suthers has offered different explanations for filing a legal brief in support of a section of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that bars gay and lesbian married couples from receiving federal marriage benefits. Reporters should find out what Suthers is really thinking. Massachusetts […]

Loan? What Loan? Don’t Worry About It

Troubling story last week from The High Timber Times:

Jefferson County on Tuesday granted a decade-long grace period on a loan of more than $6.4 million to an undeveloped metropolitan district for construction of the C-470 and Alameda interchange.

Green Tree Metropolitan District, which is governed by at least one developer who has contributed substantially to Jeffco Republican campaigns, borrowed the money in 2007 from the county to help construct the $17 million interchange.

Under the loan’s original terms in an intergovernmental agreement, Green Tree was to begin repayment at the end of 2011 with an installment of more than $2 million. The remaining principal and interest were to be repaid at the end of 2013.

But the district cites the economy for a lack of development that would allow it to begin repaying the debt.

“Our agreement anticipated development that would allow for repayment starting late this year. With current conditions we are many years away from any development necessary to begin to repay the cost of this interchange,” Green Tree board member John Mullins wrote in an e-mail to Jefferson County. “We are suggesting 2021 as a better date.”

Did campaign contributions help grease the wheels for this loan forgiveness? Reporter Emile Hallez Williams thought it worth questioning:

McCasky, who has received at least $9,000 in campaign contributions from three members of Green Tree’s board, said the donations played no factor in his decision to approve the loan.

And despite the fact that McCasky received $3,500 from the board members less than two months before the agreement was approved, he said he had no idea who sat on the district’s board.

“This isn’t about Green Tree…I don’t even know who Green Tree is. They’re just the metropolitan district managing the property,” McCasky said. “It’s immaterial who the board members are.” [Jeffco Pols emphasis]

On Aug. 7, 2007, McCasky received $500 from John Mullins, $500 from Bill Jenkins and $2,500 from Greg Stevinson – all Green Tree board members. The original intergovernmental agreement was approved on Oct. 2, 2007.

Additionally, Commissioner Faye Griffin has received $9,000 to date from Stevinson in her runs for county treasurer and commissioner, though she was not in her current office when the agreement was drafted. She also received $250 from Mullins and $250 from Jenkins in 2008.

The idea that former County Commissioner Kevin McCasky, who recently resigned to head up the Jefferson Economic Council, has no idea who is involved with Green Tree is laughable at best. Williams notes $3,500 in campaign contributions that occurred prior to the 2007 vote, but over the years McCasky has received much more — tens of thousands of dollars, in fact — in campaign contributions from people affiliated with Green Tree.

Colorado Pols Mailbag #2 (Part 1)

We got a ton of questions for our Colorado Pols Mailbag, otherwise known as “Ask Alva.” We received so many questions, in fact, that we’re going to have to answer them in separate “parts.” Click below for Part 1 of Colorado Pols Mailbag #2. KHMECK asks a few questions, including an older one that was […]

Suthers has delivered his moonlighting opinion to Gessler

( – promoted by Colorado Pols) POLS UPDATE: It’s all over, folks, as the Denver Business Journal’s Ed Sealover reports: Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler has abandoned his plans to do side work for his former law firm, he announced Tuesday afternoon. In fact, Gessler will not do any side work with any law […]

LGBT Groups to Suthers: Are You Lying, or Just Stupid?

In today’s Denver newspaper, reporter Jessica Fender takes a too-brief look at the decision by Colorado Attorney General John Suthers late last week to join a lawsuit in support of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Last July, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled against DOMA, saying that it interfered with the rights of states […]

A Love-Hate Relationship With Dave Balmer

As reported last Thursday and Friday, Rep. Dave Balmer’s privileges to visit the floor of the state Senate have been revoked for the duration of the session, in the aftermath of a confrontation there between Balmer and Sen. Gail Schwartz over redistricting. Both Balmer and Schwartz serve on the “Kabuki Kumbaya” bipartisan redistricting committee, and […]

“Where’s that warrant now, you fucking nigger?”

Marijuana in the car.  Black kid beaten beyond recognition, White kid given $160 ticket and sent home. Eventually, Landau blacked out. When he came to, he was being dragged out of the bloody gutter. Doug Lamborn Co-Sponsors DADT Repeal Repeal

The Colorado Independent’s John Tomasic: Republican California Rep. Duncan Hunter with Colorado Rep. Doug Lamborn as cosponsor has introduced the “Restore Military Readiness Act,” which would require the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to independently sign off on repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy prohibiting gay Americans from serving […]
